You're getting too close, and relying too much on turrets. At turret ranges, you're receiving the full brunt of the Battleship's firepower, and it's point-blank range to the Bugs. They're not going to miss at that range.
I only get too close when I misjump into the sprawling melee...8)
That's where a fuel injector and a couple of drop tanks come in handy.
Be aware, though, that a Kirin running injectors will chug quirium like a Ford Explorer chugs gasoline. Fuel efficient it's not. Ehh well, it is the Oolite version of a Hum-V...

That's rich. I got the NEU the old-fashioned way: I flew the mission!
Strange - so did I...So why hasn't it transferred across with the sale???
Uh-oh, sounds like a bug in the game. :(

The NEU doesn't transfer (this is intended), but the sell price of your ship is increased to reflect this. Once you have completed the mission however, you can buy a new NEU for your new ship at a high tech planet (think its tech 14 you need).
OXPS : The Assassins Guild, Asteroid Storm, The Bank of the Black Monks, Random Hits, The Galactic Almanac, Renegade Pirates can be downloaded from the Elite Wiki here.

Tell me about it, I usually carry 4 extra fuel tanks....

Don't bother with missiles now unless I'm going Bug hunting then I usually take a T missile for the Battleships 8)

Then you should complete Oolites mission first. In one of the missions the equipment is awarded. After that it becomes for sale. Unless you have a buggy oxp installed like RS. That one explicit denies you the equipment at any level by setting it at 16. But RS is known to mess with more of the internal missions.

More screenies. Of the Caduceus, as there's not enough shots of this craft here.

Hmm, I was never quite sure about that surface smoothing, I think this ship is still crying out for a good bump map. Just not one that will cripple lesser systems. It is a quandary.

Which reminds me we should really look into neoliting the dragon. I still get my ass handed to me by those bastard ships ;)

I fought off two pirate Dragon Ms with a Kirin once. I'd laser one, then the other would attack my blindside. Lather, rinse, repeat. I eventually killed one and forced the other to run, but not without taking a beating.
Good thing pirates are cheap and tend to load mostly standard missiles on a Dragon; Imagine how much more brutal they could be if they considered packing hardheads, or worse, nukes.

As for neoliting them, I havn't a clue how to begin. But I have the original model and texture files on a drive, if anyone wants to take a crack at it.

Well it'll be a case of keeping the predatory look and the sturdiness of the ship, just with a shit load more planes. Maybe an ablative armour plated variant. More fun than a paddling pool full of gin and hookers.
