Did you try an old saved file with SV removed?
I don't have one with SV removed; I'll test my existing save without it and see what changes. I could also try a fresh save without SV.

Combat Manoeuvers

The Barkanion Bounce: Barkanioth Sidereas, the Supreme Savant of the Lavean Academy's School of Strategic Studies, developed a method of swirling or looping combined with continual changes of velocity, thus making it almost impossible for the enemy to hit him as he was closing with them.
The Wrogers Writhe: Wrogers, the renowned reptilian Elite pilot from the antipodes of Riarribi, perfected the technique of performing a corkscrew approach towards the enemy using Witchfuel Injectors (thus ensuring that their laser blasts miss) until behind them, then spinning on a coin (at greatly reduced speed) and turning and strafing them. Initial missile fire could be easily ECM'd as they would be firing their missiles facing away from Wrogers, giving him more time to react.
Manfred's Manoeuver: The sun blinds your enemies in the same way that it blinds you. But if they are behind you (and you have a rear-mounted laser) ...
The Stellar Bake: If outnumbered, head for the sun (keeping the enemy close by). Enter the corona until your temperature hits the red line, then turn 180 degrees and engage your witch-fuel injectors. They will probably bake to death.
The Ahrumian Arrest: When you’re close to an enemy of comparable speed and both are circling around each other at high speed. The best way to break out of this is to slow down; the enemy will end up further away from you, and becomes easier to aim at (because his movements have a smaller arc distance from your perspective). Adalbert Ahrumias was an early Supreme Savant at the Lave Academy, a couple of generations ago.
Dybal's Defensive Barrel Roll: Commodore Dybal perfected an over-ride mechanism for his Astrogation Console allowing an attacked pilot to relax once the lasers start overheating and the shields are being depleted. To evade enemy lasers, roll & pitch simultaneously, which makes the ship spiral. Commodore Dybal's Barrel Roll equipment allows automatic performance of this manoeuver. Commander Hiran recommends installing Auto-ECM to enable automatic obliteration of inimical incoming missiles which might inhibit enjoyment of a gin & tonic/decent cup of broken Orange Pekoe tea.
Interstellar Barrel Roll: This is a hyperspace jump executed while barrel rolling. It forces a misjump that lets you end up in interstellar space. Only an option if meeting thargoids is better than facing your current threat.

Well, it appears that something has broken my save, though at first everything looked fine when I tested it yesterday. And unfortunately, I overwrote the backup! I died during a fight in the recording I was doing today, and when I reloaded the Telescope MFD no longer appeared. I still have the equipment, but the MFD doesn't show up in the rotation of options.

That's unfortunate!

The issue could be removing Ship Version, but it could also be the most recent Telescope.

Correction!

Something is just straight up wrong with Telescope. I tested a fresh save and got the same result.

Update: nope. I was wrong. Telescope MFD is working in my test save.

So it looks like I broke my game by removing Ship Version. Dang!

This is probably the end of the run for this playthrough, unfortunately. But I will start a "season two" shortly, with a fresh save and a somewhat less frantic list of OXPs, plus all the knowledge I've gained from the first run.

Perhaps as a contrast, a playthrough with minimal oxps, without all those "aids" - just eye-candy?

NOOOOOO :D

But I NEEEEEED them!

What I think I will do is run two concurrent games - one with all the toys, and one with none but the visuals.

I think Cody is onto something. If you do a short second series with just the eye-candy, then you can compare and contrast. You will also learn the basic equipment much better (just two types of missile, just 3 lasers etc), And then do a third series exploring yet another cocktail of .oxp's, and you find that you will have a much better background for your comparisons...

For example, Stranger's World moves the suns much further out which changes the gameplay for sunskimming... Try using Distant Suns or Realistic Stars instead (greater distance than the vanilla game but not so massive)

I'm guessing that I can duplicate my install folder and run two different Oolites with different OXP collections (both in AddOns and Managed AddOns) without messing anything up, which would be easier than keeping two (four) separate addon folders and swapping them out.

I think that's the right idea. I'll do an "interlude" series of maybe 5 episodes, then continue on with a "season 2" reset. I won't need to run two separate installs since I won't be doing them in parallel.

Heck, I may do the interlude with ZERO OXPs. Get that wonderful vanilla flavor.

Episode 1 of Oolite unmodded is going up, should be available soon. Wow, what a different experience!

Yep! I suggest you put a link to your YouTube page in your sig (using the User Control Panel).

One thing I noticed with vanilla is that the ambient light is much, much lower - so stations and planets have much richer shadows.

The vanilla game has a lot going for it. Add a hud of your choice, Povray Planets, Glowroids, Torus Stations, and ZygoSky - even better!

Are you au-fait with Precision Flying?

Image

Joystick Precision (sensitivity) Indicator

This is circle around the little green dot between the red scanner and the green roll & pitch indicators and above the blue compass.

If there is no joystick/controller connected, then it will not show up.
If your joystick is in precision mode this is green.
If your joystick is not in precision mode it is gray (as shown above).

The setting for which button controls the precision mode will be found in the joystick/controller configuration page (accessed via F2 screen when docked or F2 screen when game is paused).

This is the one thing missing from the Vimana HUD.
