The Man Who Folded Himself, by David Gerrold (the author responsible for Tribbles)?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

A shipful of refugees from a moon are attacked repeatedly by pirates, and most are beaten and raped, then either killed or kidnapped.

Author and title of the novel please.
