Ha... no, it pre-dates that.

Clue the second: when the astronauts return to Earth, they have an alien on board.

Um ... bugger. I thought it might be Return From the Stars by Stanislaw Lem but that rules it out!

Clue the third: the Earth that they return to is now governed by a benevolent computer, and the human race has not known war for a long time.
However, trouble is brewing with some space colonies, war may be approaching, and the alien is seen as a possible military advantage.

Sounds like The Long Way Home, but I can't remember who wrote it (I have Wes Anderson in my head but I know it's not that!)

Indeed, it is The Long Way Home, by Poul Anderson... the next clue would've been: 'Supertramp took it!'

Your turn, sir!

Poul, that's it. I'd just found it on my bookshelf after you posted....now I've got to ask a question. Arse. I don't actually read that much sci-fi funnily enough.

Mind you, it's "Trivia" isn't it. Okay, let me think and I'll come up with a question tomorrow that'll get you all....for a few minutes.

I don't have to google that one (I think)!

It's Commander Peter Jameson!

He bequeaths one (1) Eagle fighter to each grandchild, along with 100 credits!

:-)

Give the man a prize (or a least the ability to ask the next question :))

Thanks, ramon! And thanks for an AWESOME question.

OK, this is a novel about two astronauts who crash on an Earth where science is frowned upon as it caused a new ice age.

I want the authors' names (note the plurality) and the title of the book please.
