What do you listen to when playing?

Post by zevans »

I've seen quite a few people mention Pink Floyd... which is fair enough, because they were a Space Rock band once. :-)

What else?

I rarely listen to anything but the game sounds (not a music person, really), but when I do put a record on, it is usually something classic. And, by classic I mean classical music like Strauss, Mozart, Schubert etc. One of the best pieces to listen to is naturally Blue Danube, or Also Spracht Zarathustra by Richard Strauss.

DELERIUM - Spheres I & II (both albums features many samples from Odyssey 2001)
SYNAESTHESIA - Desideratum (space ambient, Delerium side project)

I simply put something nice (from Heavy Metal to classical - according to my mood) on iTunes and let it play as Oolite on Mac integrates nicely with iTunes.
Get the Oolite Keymapper for Mac here!

The Firefly soundtrack, the Serenity soundtrack, both B5 soundtracks and everything by Tori Amos.

One day I'll get round to making a ship called "Black Dove."

Via facebook I've just discovered an old school friend is a top notch musician - I love his music - some of it suits cruising the stars really well...

Suitably eclectic so far, I thought as much. :-)

Classical: Die Fledermaus seems to fit well
I forgot about FSOL - I listen to ISDN plenty
Last.fm randomly threw me some Synaethesia the other week, I remember thinking I must listen to some more
Have to look into Delereum!
Listening to yer man now DH, trying to work out what it reminds me of... Tracey Chapman, somehow?

He laughed when I also mentioned that there were moments of Tracey Chapman in his intonation - so we're not alone clearly!

EDIT: Just got hold of a USB Vinyl Record deck which means I'll finally have the chance to copy an amazing album that my dad has had since the late 60s/early 70s - it was called "Sounds Outstanding" (memorable by the sleeve alone - two naked silver ladies on the front cover) - designed for those who had just invested in a new fangled stereo record player it was written on a MOOG and really milked the stereo effect to the max - some of the synthesized "battle" music I imagine will suit Oolite quite well.

Anybody remember "Total Annihilation" - with its beautifully crafted orchestral pieces that changed depending on whether you were in your building/exploring phase or a frenetic fight to the death situation - now that WOULD be nice in Oolite!

Seconded.. I like this album whilst playing. :D
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Only you could come up with something that neither Wikipedia nor Google (or me) has heard of! Could be quite rare then? Why do I have a funny feeling Wendy Carlos will be involved...

Now you mention it - the Chemical Brothers released loads of promos entitled "Electronic Battle Weapons x" - never thought of putting those on (some of them were ideas that turned into better known singles)

Glad I wasn't imagining Tracey Chapman... although have changed my mind now and I'm going Gracelands era Paul Simon ;-)

@ Drew:

I usually don't listen to anything, even play without sound effects.

But I always thought Jean-Michel Jarre wouldn't be completely misplaced in the voids of the Ooniverse.
