Do you have an NVidia GeForce? Just add the switch -nosplash to the game's startup shortcut and it will work.
I do have GeForce, and did as you suggested. It make no difference (apart from the splash screen not appearing, of course).

1.65 appears ok at first glance.

Here is the link to 1.72.2:
http://prdownload.berlios.de/oolite-lin ... 2-test.exe
Can you please post the log after this has been run? You will need to uninstall 1.73.4 first.

Uninstalled 1.73.4, deleted C:\oolite
Installed 1.73.2 (which went in to "Program Files\oolite" directory)

I didn't add -nosplash as it was a batch file

I got the same problem, no visible text, just blocks of colour - here's the log

OK, you most likely have a problem with the drivers. If 1.72.2, as well as 1.73.4 with -nosplash are reporting the same thing, then your drivers are either incorrectly installed or there is a conflict with a previous driver installation, leading to usage of the software renderer. At this point, I can only recommend a full graphics driver update. Before doing that, though, try to confirm the status of your drivers by running the glview program, found at http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/

I did that, and had to download something called .NET, and I still have no idea what I'm looking for, I'm afraid. There was a "download OpenGL drivers" selection, and that took me to a page which required IE, and I don't run IE.

Sorry to be a nuisance, but how do I download new drivers?

You will need to get them from the NVidia site and be sure that they correspond to your actual graphics card and operating system. Have you been able to run glview? If yes, can you please post the information contained in its main page?

Code: Select all

System Info
  Renderer: GDI Generic
  Adapter RAM: 256MB
  Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
  Display: 1440x900x32bpp (60 Hz)
Operating System: Microsoft Word XP Home Edition
  Processor: Intel Pentium CPU 3.00GHz

OpenGL
  Version: 1.1
  Driver version: 6.14.10.5673
  03-Aug-04

DirectX
  Version: 9.0c - August 2004
  Shader model: vx_2.0, ps_2_0
There's something I didn't notice last time, on the OpenGL "Driver version" line - "Check for updated drivers", but again that takes me to a page which requires IE, so it's of no use to me.

I've got to disappear for a couple of days now, I'll check in again on Thursday.

Thanks for your patience, anyway.

That's the source for nVidia drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

The site works perfectly well with Firefox.

For me, it properly fills in everything in "Option 1" about the card, but somehow defaults to 32bit Vista instead of selecting 64bit. I simply never tried Option 2 (automatic detection) ;)

Welcome to the boards, Peterward... :D

If you're using Firefox, there is an Add-on you can get called "IE Tab" which will allow you to optionally open a page in a FF tab, but using IE's rendering engine to draw the page. I use it for the 1 or 2 sites I need to access that don't work with Firefox. It could be worth a try..

Unless your objection to IE is based on "religious" grounds, that is..

I got new drivers from the Nvidia site. I've reinstalled 1.73.4, and I'm getting visible text now, even without disabling the splash screen, so everything seems ok at first glance.

I'll look into that IE add-on for Firefox as well.

It's 25 years or more since I played this game, a real blast from the past.

Thanks for the help.
