I lkie that let's see if we can find a "sea of turmoil" somewhere else on map 5 (It's about time we used that one, and I can't think of a better place than here.Diziet Sma wrote:From your list of unused region names back on page 1 of this thread, "The Sea of Turmoil" seems rather apt..ClymAngus wrote:Good ideas all (most of which are not mutually exclusive), is there an ambiguous (maybe even a little abstract) term that might cover all these possibilities? In naming the region, I don't really want to be limiting, is all.

Just another thought, but there are lots of place on the earth that are effectively in a state of anarchy that's not war related such as many places in Africa and Central Asia, Detroit, Moss Side in Manchester . The people from these places are not capable of sieging anything organised like a high tech government.
If a third party had destabilised these anarchy worlds by putting big fleets in orbit, removing all government that could resist and then ignored the people living there as long as they "didn't get in the way" then you could get a siege situation like described. Or it could be exploitation the other way with the High Tech world destabilising all the neighouring government and sucking their economies dry. The important thing is that the anarchy worlds should really be the result not the cause.
That's my 2 credits worth.

Well, we'll keep it nice and open. Don't want to stifle future creative endeavour when we're only just getting the maps sorted.
To be honest there's enough creative explanation in the maps in total to last 10 life times. It is my personal belief (and I'm not trying to put words in other peoples mouths here) that given the amount that could be written and made, that if I don't intent to "rough guide" a system or oxp it, then the best gift I can offer is one of ambiguity. Whilst remaining respectful of all the works that have already been made of course. Canon is so difficult to maintain when you have an "ant farm" creative endeavour.
It's just not my row to hoe.

Of course, plenty of Anarchy planets could be pleasant, civilised places on the ground. Especially when dealing with alien races, an Anarchy just means the lack of any form of central government: it doesn't have to be a dystopian hellhole.
Mind you, no matter how pleasant and self-organising things might be on the ground, it's an undeniable fact that these systems are all dog-eat-dog above the air ... and of course spacers' charts will reflect spacers' concerns and experiences. So any name for this volume should convey the dangerous nature of the area. How about "Bad News Bay"?

I always imagined that some of the poor Agricultural Human Colonial Anarchies were actually huge Hippy Communes, very happy amongst themselves but a very "whatever man" attitude to their space lanes, so it would seem that our thoughts are not too disparate on the matter!Disembodied wrote:Of course, plenty of Anarchy planets could be pleasant, civilised places on the ground. Rumor has it that the Trumbles were discovered on a planet in chart 5. The planet in question - by all accounts uninhabited except for a small research station - is off the chart, quarantined, it's location a tightly kept secret.
This would explain the vast proliferation of anarchies in chart 5, wouldn't it?
As trumbles were spread around as pets or worse, bioweapons, they would have drastic effects on planetary economies.
And no, one hard luck, trumble-dealing felinoid couldn't cause that much damage.
Whatever happened in chart 5 to cause such widespread collapse of law and order, the region is a thug's paradise, and a bounty hunter's shooting gallery. "Survival of the best armed," as it's often put.

Sorry for not getting the updates done. Saturday afternoon and evening was spent (on da pish) and Sunday spent recovering. (I'm getting too old for this I really am). I should have everything discussed up by this evening though.
What has happened to Da Cat? Nothing serious I hope.
I like the trumble idea, that coupled together with the war zone going on just below it. Would be enough to send any gal base over apex.

Da Cat is heavily involved in RL(tm) but has PM'ed me to squash vicious rumours that he has been eaten by his cargo!

All available maps have links in the first post on page one of this thread.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

My bad I found the link to 5.1 which didn't look any different from previous time I looked!

Well the 5.1 was only there as a war zone overlay. I'm still looking into ways of tying that into this map, whilst also looking for the perfect place for......DaddyHoggy wrote:My bad I found the link to 5.1 which didn't look any different from previous time I looked!
The Plush Septicity: Trumble ground zero.
