An OXP I'd like to have
At the moment I'm running three OXP's:
System Redux
Fighter Hud
Target Reticle
These I consider essential. However, I'd like to see different-coloured suns
and maybe the occasional binary system.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Suns are already a different colour - it's just very subtle - and yes as already stated in 1.73 there will be major changes to the appearance and the fiddle-ability of the system sun...El Viejo wrote:At the moment I'm running three OXP's:

Yep, I keep thinking "let's have a bit more astronomy" - more Frontier than Elite, if you know what I mean. Pulsars, white holes, black holes, black hole at the Core, solar systems... a Kemplerer rosette?
In fact let's just have a Known Space OXP and a Ringworld! Problem is I suspect this is beyond OXP and would need code changes...

A sudden rushing sensation as you accelerate faster and faster towards an invisible nothingness, followed by "Press Space Commander."Cows wrote:That sounds pretty interesting. I wonder what it would be like to fall into a black hole.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

At .35 leptons everything should be running about a quarter slower relative to someone standing on the planet anyway, if I remember my special relativity correctly.
Mind you the speed the ol' rustbucket gets from zero to .35 you might well cause a local black hole behind you every time you give it some shoe! (General relativity.) Maybe the rumoured mil-spec hyperdrive is actually an Alcubierre drive.
Am I imagining things now, or did Black Angel on the Archimedes actually include relativity in the physics engine? (And I bet there's a dozen other ideas for OXPs in Black Angel too).

Actually I was thinking of Elite Plus…anyone remember that? I still have it on 3.5 floppy and occasionally run it in DosBox. I’m sure that had coloured suns and the occasional double. It also had a ninth galaxy, I think.
I also have Frontier Elite II on 3.5 floppy. I’ve tried many times over the years to master Frontier but the Newtonian physics makes combat almost impossible. It’s pretty, though.

I like the idea of diving into a black hole and then "pressing space". An interesting term for the compression of matter to the nth degree.

Your memories of Elite Plus are correct!
I too have Frontier on both my (working) Amiga and in PCDOS/3.11 version on 3.5".
Combat in Frontier devolved into - buy ship with turrets - fit mining lasers to turrets - enter combat - pause game - switch to turret view - line up on enemy ship - press fire - unpause - enemy ship gets hit - wait for mining laser to recycle - pause game - repeat until dead...
Worked my way up to Elite like this - well that and an imp courier full of shields and you'd just ram your way to victory!

Ruthless, DH, ruthless. Ramming indeed!
Do you recall a joystick glitch in Elite Plus. I had to use a combo of stick and keyboard control to reach Elite status. After some time at that level, there was a silly promotion where "Commander Whatever" became "Archangel Whatever".
Alas, my copy of the original Elite for BBC was on 5.25 floppy. Horrible things, prone to random acts of data corruption. That's IBM for you!

Ah, you only got to Archangel if you completed the mission where the Thargoids had taken over a station...El Viejo wrote:Ruthless, DH, ruthless. Ramming indeed!
