Twin lasers and turrets

Post by govert »

Is there any comprehensive source around for which ships feature twin front lasers, turrets, etc?

The wiki does not seen reliable on this matter. As an example, the Wolf mk II page does not mention twin front lasers, but judging from my encounters (and the look) they do have twin front lasers.

Am I going to have to parse the shipdata.plist to find the info?
In that case, what do I look for?

Maybe the reason is that a player ship can only have a single laser for one direction! Only the NPCs do have multiple lasers.

Griffs Krait, the Iguana, the Liberator and the ships from military fiasco have multiple front lasers as NPC. Quite nasty - with larger ships, they tend to hit the rear shields from the front, thus making proper evasive very difficult.

I came across a Navy Escort ship, at snip at 2.7m credits so exchanged it for my Falcon-S and was surprised when in the middle of battle it automatically let loose its turrets at the hostile ship targeted!! Saved me the effort of having to hold down 'a' :)

It's engery banks are rubbish but with a speed of 0.76 you can just zip away if things get to hot...

The more normal turretted suspects are the Caduceus and the Dragon. There are almost certainly more though, but I can think of those two offhand.

I'm sure more will follow since the feature was only introduced in 1.72, although there are still some problems with turretted ships and certain OXPs (Cataclysm, Lave Academy and Fuel Station identified at the moment).

Falcons too.
they only work to the rear though, which makes it a bit of a porcupine.
once your lasers overheat, turn & blast away.
either that or pretend to leg it & lure them into a chase. not too fast though.
can't think of any bum jokes, but i'm sure there is one.

Dragon SE, Dragon M, Xarik Spaceplane, Caduceus, Falcon, Griff Boa.

Some notes on turrets:

- Turrets are short ranged (within 5m), packing a single plasma cannon each, and not very accurate.

- Turrets are semiautomatic, meaning they'll only track and fire on a hostile that has been locked as a target. The target MUST be an immediate threat.

- NPCs can use turrets effectively as point-defense to shoot down missiles. While it's been said player-ship turrets can shoot down missiles as well, I've yet to see any player turret take a single shot at incoming missiles. And I use a missile scanner which is supposed to lock incoming missiles as targets.

With these limitations in mind, IMHO turrets supplement rather than replace lasers, and should be used in a defensive role.
