Deck plans?
Hi all, quick question: Does anybody here know if there exist deck plans for Elite ships? (most notably, of course, the Cobra MK3)
I have been browsing around for pictures, especially in fcw-format (for campaign cartographer), but so far, found nothing.
(Reason for asking: I "need" a deck plan for a little game I am planning to make- just a 2d top-down shoot/beat 'em up with trumbles running rampant, but if possible I would like the ship to look somewhat canonical )

i think Jannah Berihn did a lot of work on this and she posted about it all the time on the ebbs. Do a search there and you should find something.

Years ago, to teach myself a 3D CAD program, I did a complete 3D model of a Viper with all the internals, engines, internal missile racks, lasers, etc. I started with the basic hull, because it was easy to do, and moved on to more complex things as I worked through the program's tutorials and learned more commands.
Every now and then I start on another one just to play around with it to keep in practice with 3D modeling software - but I rarely get much further than building a hull and some decks.
One big question I always run into though, is the accepted units of measure in feet or meters? If it's feet, some of the ships are quite small, if it's meters, then even a basic Cobra is a very big piece of equipment.
I've started playing around with a chopped Mamba that I was going to make an OXP of - actually I have several variants, I was going to make them various retired racers that have been snatched up and pressed into service as escorts, but recent OXP ships (**cough Griff's stuff cough**) has made me think that my skills are far below par and the learning curve too steep.
Maybe I'll just finish one up as a virtual tour through an Oolite ship...

I think metres is the agreed unit and yes the Cobby3 is a very large ship, but if you think it can have a huge amount of extra equipment fitted mostly internally - 3 extra missile mounts, extended cargo bay, ECM, Extra energy unit, even a cloaking device - it's pretty nippy and has enough space for two crew to live comfortably for long periods of time - and let's face it B&B designed it to be the ship everybody who played started with - they wanted to make it "grand" and who can blame them for that!
Do you still have any of your CAD models - they'd be nice to see!

The Cobra3-section shows, by the way, that any big 'windows' on the ship are fake.Erai wrote:Never heard of that name... but I wonder why, now- pictures like these make me happy, this is precisely what I was looking forJack_H wrote:i think Jannah Berihn did a lot of work on this and she posted about it all the time on the ebbs. Oh well, I'll probably not be able to show windows anyway.Commander McLane wrote:The Cobra3-section shows, by the way, that any big 'windows' on the ship are fake.
Although I like how the Acorn- and Berihn- versions contradict each other. Gives me a lot of freedom to, in the words of the Great Prophet, "set the record straight or at least, firmly crooked"
I think I'll use something roughly like this

Cobra MK III General Plans
Hi, its been a while since I posted, Jannah Berihn (aka Jannah Reich in Second Life) and I wish to point out that high-rez images of the Cobra MK III do exist and that I am declaring them public domain as long as I am credited with their illustration in any usage. They can be found at:

Note: Hosted on a friends DeviantART page. Well, thats it, no legal issues now. Heh! So, knock yourself out. I will continue to operate an Intellectual Rights blanket on the images, but thats it. Enjoy!

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
