Better plasma weps

Post by nOvAkNiGhT »

Hey all, I'm kinda new to oolite so sorry for this question :p

When I was out in my new supercobra after getting realistic shipyards I came across a navy juggernaut, but when I attacked it it totally owned me with these plasma cannons or something, but the plasma cannons you can buy on oolite are rubbish, so is there a way to get better ones?

Hi nOvAkNiGhT,
in my new supercobra after getting realistic shipyards I came across a navy juggernaut, but when I attacked it it totally owned me with these plasma cannons
With Realistic Shipyards, Obi-Wan Kenobi`s saying "There is always a bigger fish" does apply. The Navy Juggernaut is one of the biggest and meanest battle carriers in the entire game even with RS in, a formidable opponent even to a SuperCobra. One could say that the distance power-wise from the Juggernaut to the SuperCobra is bigger even than the SuperCobra`s difference to the original Cobra MkIII.

It`s meant to just roll over you if you are not in a really good ship which is shielded and armed to the teeth, and are capable of some really fancy fighting.

By the way, just a curious question: If you are new to Oolite, how did you manage to acquire a SuperCobra so fast? That takes some time, I thought ...

However, have fun and welcome to the boards 8)

Hi, nOvAkNiGhT, and first of all welcome to the boards and of course to this great game! :D

Not knowing the Juggernaut myself I would guess he got you with his plasma turrets (not cannons). You will meet these at a couple of other ships and stations as well, usually as very powerful defensive weapons. So I wouldn't suggest you attempt to attack for instance a BlackMonk Monastery, or a Sentinel Station or Renegade Station, or The Liberator, for that matter.

That's the first bad news.

The second bad news is that you as player can't have plasma turrets. Even if you buy a ship that has them fitted, they wouldn't fire. (It's the same with having multiple front lasers, like the Imperial Courier. The player version of the ship can't have them.)

The downside to turrets is range. A Military Laser can hit a target 20 km away. But a turret is limited to 5 km. Keep a big turreted ship at a distance and you can wear it down, whilst it is unable to harm you. Get to close though and a barrage from 20 turrets will quickly spell Game Over!
