Oolite on the PS3

Post by CaptKev »

Would it be possible to play the linux version of Oolite on the Playstation 3?

With the speed of the graphics chip and a 42" plasma connected, this would be a great way to get the best out of Oolite.

I'm considering installing 'Yellow Dog Linux' on my PS3 but because there's no 3D hardware acceleration I'm not sure if games like Oolite would run very well.

Unfortunately

Unfortunately, the Linux setup on the PS3 doesn't allow access to the graphics chip. Instead there is a frame buffer that is blitted to the screen 60odd times a second

Any OpenGL would have to be a pure software implementation (although you could make use of the SPUs to provide a fair amount of power for it).

So the performance may not be as good as you'd like to hope :-(

I don't think Sony is so keen on seeing people competing with them in the games department... not without appropriate royalties anyway.

Hi coriolis and welcome aboard! :D

Never mind, I suppose you can't blame Sony really. I'll just have to wait until Elite IV comes out on the PS3, what a game that will be.

Well I've been lurking for a long time... just my old account won't let me log in, so I've had to create a new one. (Need to message the admin ... and no mention of how to do that if I don't have an account...)

But thank you for the greetings ;-)

Bah. they want to be all Open Source friendly with allowing linux, but then intentionally cripple it...I think we can blame sony freely enough. A definite case of eating and keeping cakes (Or maybe the cake in this case was just a lie). They also reserve an SPU for a monitor process, so there are only 6 available.

I'd be betting on more of a launch title for the PS4 really.

It’s (now) bb-admin squiggle oolite dot org (hey look, we’ve got oolite.org now). The admin also happens to have a different address in his sig which ends up at the same place. :-)
