Me neither :(
Who hosts/owns it? It responds when you ping it but there's nothing there for the browser to see...

It's hosted on a server in Winston's house, as far as I know...

The rest of the Alioth domain is up, it's just the wiki. It could be the database.

I'd expect at least an error page if the database server went down...

It's still down, but Dylan's website is accessible, so it's not his server down.

Neither are in my house! I just don't have that sort of bandwidth.

The wiki lives on providence.alioth.net, which is physically in a datacentre in London.
www.alioth.net lives on hope.alioth.net, which is physically in a datacentre in Dallas.

They both have different software loads (the latter is a bit backlevel to the former, because the latter has users with hairy scripts which might break with a radical upgrade).

Unfortunately, there was a duff upgrade on apache on providence, which went undetected for a couple of weeks (it ran fine, but wouldn't restart), and when the problem actually exposed itself, I was far too busy at work to check it out so it just had to stay in that state until I had time to fix it.

Many many appppolooogies for the inconwenience.

Hello all, i'm a new guy here, but an old guy in terms of the game we all love.
Ah those days of playing on the bbc micro - difficult to beat......although from what I've seen of Oolite so far it's possible!

Anyway I'd also been having problems getting the wiki to work, and find out more about Oolite, but that does all seem fine now.

My problem is that for some reason the links to the original Oosat, for the various oxp's that are stored on that site, doesn't seem to work. Any link from the wiki that points to Captain Hacks Oosat1 gives me a page which has this message:

*"You've slipped between the lines of the site. The page you were looking for doesn't exist anymore, probably because of the redesign.

If you can't see the navigation buttons, just click here."

When I do click the 'Here' part of that message I get sent to *capnhack's website

But nowhere on that site can I find any of the Oolite oxp's - it just seems to be to do with webdesign etc.

Any help on how to get the oxp's that should be hosted on Oosat1 will be very welcome as there are a fair few really interesting sounding ones i'd love to try out.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to further Oolite adventures here :)

*P.S. I was going to post links to exactly which webpages i'm getting to, but forum policy won't let me yet untill i've proven i'm not a spam monster.

First of all: Hi, Cmdr Thorsson, and welcome to the boards and of course to this great game! :D

Second: You're right! All the Oolite related stuff on Cap'n Hack's site seems to be gone! I don't even know whether this is still the same Cap'n Hack (haven't visited anything else on his site, except for Oosat 1). But it seems so, according to the memberlist his occupation is graphics designer, which is in line with the site as it presents itself.

I don't remember when I last visited Oosat 1, but it's not too long ago. Maybe one or two weeks. So this is a quite recent change.

Anyway: I guess that means we have to put all the stuff that was located on Oosat 1 to other locations and change the old links. Of course this will need some time (and someone to do it, of course).

In the meantime: Sorry, Oosat 1, as we knew it, has ceased to exist. May it rest in peace!

I try to PM Cap'n Hack, but it's ages since he last contributed to the boards, I don't know whether he will notice a private message. Or perhaps he just has completely lost his interest in Oolite?? I don't know.

EDIT: Done, PM'd him. Now hoping for an answer.

Sorry, Winston. I always had it in my head that your domains were home hosted!

I do consider home hosting them for mad moments... but consumer ADSL is totally unsuitable (256k upstream!), and the least expensive symmetric internet link that's suitable that we can get here costs £225/month for 2Mbps. I pay less than that for the two physical servers combined (and that includes everything, the actual server hardware itself, the electricity they use, and the connection to the internet) and each server has a 10Mbps symmetric connection to the internet!

The only real advantage I could get to home hosting would be the ability to throw a lot more CPU and memory at the boxes and have console access (upgrading the kernel on a machine over 4000 miles away is always a bit nail-biting).

Cap'n Hack has answered and fixed the problem. :D The download links are working again, and also the Oosat page is reachable again.

Excellent! Thanks for that swift response from both yourself and Cap'n Hack :D

Now to try even more oxps until Oolite explodes, or my pc becomes a self aware Thargoid AI!
