"Fatalism is not an argument, it's the avoidance of an argument."

this isn't an argument. it's more like a little whine by someone having a little hissy-fit because he didn't save the game and lost several hours gameplay.

newsflash for you : sht happens. it's that simple. gamewise, witchspace misjumps are caused by a malfunction in the jump equipment, vastly complex navigation & control computers and very powerful engines. ANY little thing could go wrong, no matter how well you fly, fight, look after your ship - someone recently got shoved out of the Witchspace tunnel ina collision.. things happen that are out of the control of the player.
your arguments are...interesting to say the least. "Combat risk is highly variable and highly influenced by the player. You get to choose the systems you fly to, and so you have a way to control your risk. " exactly - but there's still a chance that no matter where you go, how "safe" a system, a pair of Pythons w/ Wolf escorts is gonna hop in and blow the sht out of you. it's happened to me in Corporate States. it's an aspect of the game. sht happens. should we take THAT out and make CorpSes 100% safe?? I'd vote no.
taking the misjump aspect *completely* out the game is unrealistic. you could say you're "fixing/making safer" that interaction between the puters and the engines, but at the end of the day - sht happens. that's one reason why spaceshuttles and planes crash, you can spend any amount of resources on something and there'll STILL be a chance it'll go t*ts-up. All you can do is narrow the odds of that, and that has already been done to most people's satisfaction, demonstrated by the amount of times you misjump w/out forcing it. personally, it's only happened to me once.
it's like the FdLs who fight at full burn. you can be the best pilot in the world, choose the safest routes going, but there's still a random chance that one will appear and have rammed you into oblivion before you can nail him. it's happened to me more than once, see my other thread.

me, i save the game the instant i dock, because i've had the game vanish while changing screens and lost xxx kills and yyy tons of scooped cargo. usually save when i'm kitted out and ready to launch, just to save time in case i get nailed or the game crashes again. F2+Enter. learn it, it doesn't take much effort.

"But don't you see, reloading *isn't* realism? you have one life. " riiiight. if that's the way you play, starting afresh after every time you die, you're gonna be waiting a long time to get to Elite.

Whereas this isn't a hissy fit at *all*.

It’s one of those expressions people use when they can’t agree on disagreeing.

The thought struck me; maybe we could say the Thargoids have hyperspace drive *jammers*.

So, you go to jump, when you come out, it's because they intercepted you, you only lose fuel pro rata, so you will be able to reach your destination, but you have to nail or escape from the Thargoids to be able to hyperspace out.

And what's more, the jammer could then in fact be a piece of in-game kit players could buy for themselves.

Which leads to the question; how come we don't see pirates who are loosing hyperspace out to safety?

Also, we could find pirates use the jammer too, to prevent prey from escaping that way.

In Elite on the Sinclair Spectrum you could get trapped in Witch Space, as in Oolite.

Commander, nobody promised you that Space was safe!

[nitpick]
Isn't witchspace where you're at while seeing the rings?

(and interplanetary space is where you end up, if you exit witchspace at the wrong place)[/nitpick]

as you could in the commodore 64 version..

and this was especially true during the Thargoid document mission..

was trapped Quite a few times, Save game to the rescue, luckly... or do max 3.5 ly jumps... which was quite tedious sometimes when you had to do more than this

But now, with the joy of OXPing, you can fear (not) less, what with Behemoths, Leviathans and Witchdrive Fuel drop canisters and all.

That's exactly how I see it, but peeps do (me included sometimes) talk about being stuck in witchspace, when it is really an interplanetry space void, too far away from scannable planets.

There ought to be a proper name for it, any ideas?

in real life, not oolite or elite

Definitions are

interplanetary space = space beetween planets
interstellar space = space beetween stars outside a any stars planetary system.. or out side the stars "ort" cloud, or outside the stars helios bow shock...

read on www.nasa.gov for these terms.. since its beyond the scope of this thread ;-)..

so stuck in interstellar space would be correct, however.

witchspace could be slang for it, as we do not travel in witchspace when making interstellar jumps.

We travel in a wormhole which exit sometimes when a misjump happens in interstellar space /(slang)Witchspace

On a sidenote, on the classic commodore 64 version of classic elite, it read Hyperspace jump in 15,14,13 etc... not witchspace jump in 15.14.13 etc...

but im happy with the name Witchspace jump, or "stranded in witchspace"...

On the MSX version it was Hyperspace jump too.
