New pc player. Should i install a beta .exe or other files?

Post by zeep »

Hi all. I am getting ready to start playing this game. Elite was one of my favorite games back on the MSX so i hope to get that feeling back in Oolite. I've been browsing through the Oolite community, reading about development and addons. It's good to see so much enthousiasm among everybody, it seems Oolite will go a long way before it's completely abandoned.

Now my question is this: Of course i want to get the most out of my first Oolite experience so what files do i absolutely need to install? At the moment i have the default pc installation.

My pc is average. xp sp1, 2ghz athlon 2400+, 1gb ram, 9800pro 128mb

Hello all and thanks for your thoughts. ;)

Hi zeep, welcome to the boards and the game!
Yes, we're all very enthOosiastic here (sorry, sorry). If you've got the basic Oolite game (is it the basic v.1.65 or the textured planets version b dajt from this post), then you can start with OXP's which extend the number of ships you can encounter (or buy), or even adjusting systems such as Lave.oxp, which adds elements to the space around Lave station in the vein of the 'Dark Wheel' novella from the original Elite, or Commies.oxp which alters all communist systems to a more 'Soviet' style. If you are that way inclined you can add 'non-Elite genre' ships, such as those found 'In a Galaxy far, far away'. Dr. Nil, one of our resident OXP contributors, has added a comprehensive list of presently available OXP's to the Oolite Wiki. Browse, download and enjoy at your leisure. A word of warning, though. When installing OXP's it's best to place them in one at a time and then run Oolite, to make sure that there is no problems with interactions between the OXP's.

Hi Captain Hesperus, that addon that makes the system Dark Wheel novella-like sounds very interesting. Hadn't seen that one yet. I have seen some nice ships. What to do, what to do, decisions, decisions. :D

The file i downloaded is OoliteInstall-v1.65.exe, so the .exe that adds textures to planets is a different one right? I'll check it out.

The textured planets modification is a replacement of oolite.exe, so install OoliteInstall-v1.65.exe, then download the replacement .exe from the link I gave and swap the executables (I'd keep the old oolite.exe, in case there is a problem, just rename it xoolite.exe). Then check out the Wiki link or Oosat Two/One for Lave.oxp. Download and unzip, then add the folder named Lave.oxp (not the one called Lave) to the AddOns folder in your Oolite directory. Make sure that any .txt files don't go into the AddOns folder 'cos they have a tendency to foul up the game until their taken out. Open Oolite and enjoy the heady atmosphere of Lave Station One. Note, there is also an OXP that adds the 'Dark Wheel Cobra' (as seen on the cover of the original Elite box). It is called DWCobra.oxp. :)

If you like eye candy textured planets is a must.
Be careful which ship OXP's you add, there are sme real viscious ones out there that will shaft you instantly, you need some good eqpt to take them on, I'd put in the Dark Wheel Cobra OXP first, it's spec is the same but an excellent looking ship. For ear candy put in Custom Sounds OXP.

Captain Hesperus
I've just had a look for this exe, the files don't seem to be there any more? Any where else I can look?

This would have been my next question, if the sounds in-game could be modded/improved. Thanks again for all the comments.

Also, like TheGroover says, the textured planet .exe is no longer available at those locations. I'll do some searches around the forum, i can imagine it's posted in more threads.

All Win32 related downloads are available at the Berlios Oolite-PC site.
