[EliteWiki] Rough Guide to the Ooniverse.

I managed to bamboozle https://perchance.org/ai-text-to-image-generator into producing these:

Digebiti (not yet in the Rough Guide)

The current craze for Extreme Dominoes involves large dominoes crafted from Bemearan Walnut Wood and imported at great expense. The Dominoes are half again as big as a chap. Players usually stand on galleries surrounding the courtyards where the games are played, issuing instructions to those moving the pieces. The current champion is the Dowager Margravine of Outer Snoring, whose grasp of the deficiencies of her opponents is second to none. The larger households have already deputised some of their heftier footmen for this task, and a new guild of domino dominators is being formed. Attempts by the Guild of Sculptors to replace the wood with carved local stone have yet to achieve any success.

Laenin
Image
The capital city, Peoplesville, contains the massive ruins of the Imperial Palace which Laenin destroyed. In front is a colossal statue of Laenin, holding his great book aloft in the skies. Facing the statue and the ruins is the Red People's Palace made of crimson sandstone. This is where the Comintern meets and decides policy for the planet, furthering the economic development of the people. The roads in Peoplesville contain a special lane down the middle for the limousines of the people's commissars, so that they can move quickly to address the concerns of the people. The major roads are oft-times surrounded by the ruins of the vestiges of the "ancien regime" - theatres, opera houses, libraries and other ancient dens of capitalist iniquity. The Thought Police lovingly care for the people, making sure that their desires and needs are heeded by those who can truly help. On many an occasion the best help is to be found in an astro-gulag where the true needs of the perplexed can be met with the thoughtful and considerate assistance that is really required.

Ashoria, the planetary capital, positively reeks of history. Visitors with a penchant for the quaint can seek out the old Spacer Lodgings in Abbey district; those who value modernity over charm will find the best hotels in Central, or downtown in Karbeck, near Holdstock plaza. The seat of government, the Hermione, sits within the actual bays of the original colony ship, in the old Riverside area of the city. Although the hull’s graceful lines are crusted over now with offices and extensions, chambers and bureaucratoria, the Tyrant still rules from the Bridge and the formal entrance gardens still lead you to the main gangway. For any student of the history of human spaceflight, a tour around the Hermione is a fascinating voyage back in time. Trips should be booked well in advance, although it is sometimes possible to pick up a standby ticket if you get there early enough.

The Republic of Maar is an aristocracy. Only the blue bloods get to vote for the Overlord, who rules with the advice of the Bishop of the Straits, just to the north. The capital, Owrosstos, was riven by an earthquake half a millennium ago, and the city has since developed on either side of the rift itself, making its way down into the depths. Crossed at regular intervals by swaying rope-bridges, the local aristocrats maintain palaces hewn into the rift walls, with elaborate entrance halls lined with statues and sculptures, sourced from all over the Eight. Almost all are open to visitors for a consideration (paid to the under-butler): both the Blue Palace and the Obsidian Manse are particularly lavish.

Tianve
Image
Tianvilus is the main city that is mostly under a shielded glass dome for protection. Under this glass ceiling the visitor is delighted to find some ancient temples devoted to the Pulsargod Tiaxus. It is believed that Tiaxus must be brought sacrifices to extend the time before he repeats his infamous 'Sunrage'. Non-religious people simply call the 'Sunrage' a Sun or pulsar storm. This time of high radiation activity happens once every 50 years or so but cannot be accurately predicted. In the eye of the non-religious inhabitant the worship of Tiaxus is basically a waste of time.

Every fifth Hundredth Day there is a snowball competition between the denizens of the Eight Octants. The populace, dressed in their traditional fur coats, assemble at the lower plateau of Mount Ahruman. As they watch, the regional champions roll a large snowball up the lower slopes of the Mountain, accumulating mass as they roll. It is not unknown for the opposition to secretly ice part of the slopes, in the hope that the opposing champions will slip and be crushed beneath their snowball as it reverses and makes its way back down the slope. The largest snowball to make it to the top wins the championship (within the time specified by the Knucklebones of Negation) and the regional roller is feted on the triumphant return to their octant. It is not unknown for fights to occur when matters look as though they have been manipulated in one interest or another, and the death toll can run into the dozens.

It is also not uncommon for the Minor Council to purposefully arrange for a snowball competition for visiting dignitaries, to provide sport and honour them with a spectacle. The last such was the visit of Sir Cody (Bart.) of El Viejo O.O.O.O. (Officer of the Order of the Opulent Ooniverse) with his boon companion Lord Milo of Maregeis, Grand Knight Commander of the Beatific Order of the Besters of the Barbaric Bots. That snowball competition lasted for three hours and witnessed 39 deaths (three by defenestration), eighty-seven shattered limbs and forty-four broken ribs. It was widely acclaimed as one of the best such spectacles for several decades.

Zarece
Image
The conolization of Zarece was performed by the refugees from Reorte with the technological help of the lizards of Tionisla. Conolization should not be confused with colonization, a quite different process. Zarece, uniquely, enjoyed both. Nineteen large orbital cities were built, of a size enabling the cultivation of the jungles where the agricultural foodstuffs are produced and the furs hunted. These orbitals each drag several agricultural "floats" behind them, as they waft over the superdense gaseous "seas".

It has been argued by some of the savants of the University of Murraor that these superdense gases are not strictly gaseous, that they should rather be termed as plasma - that peculiar state which is liminal between gas and liquid and exists only at certain temperatures and pressures. No matter. What really counts is this: the ways in which the light of the sun is refracted through the lower levels is quite phenomenal - the nights on Zarece have to be seen to be believed. The shimmering coruscations of the colours, with sparkling motes and shimmering bands. The nightime cities with their tall, sparkling, slender towers and their lambent lower regions are legendarily spectacular.

This has proven to be inspirational for those of a poetic bent, and many of the local denizens engage in regular family poetry readings in their homes. Needless to say, Zarece has become a place of pilgrimage for feline poets, artists and those working in the imaginatory crafts. Imbibulation of appropriate intoxicants, followed by a sunset visit trip through the "ocean" to witness the views of an orbital city from a distance, have enabled many a feline to enter a trance-like state conducive to the alliterative allusions necessary for the production of poetic hyperbole.

Sadly, this is only true for those with cat's eyes. Other species, with less impressionable eyeballs, find they can see little of these supposed splendours, and the emotional burblings and unending recitals of the inhabitants become quite insufferable in no time at all. Tedious, in fact. Listening to the felines ooh and aah over dark, murky and dismal roilings of muck-tinted sludge has been likened to the joys of listening to a Happy Eye preacher in the fourth hour of his ecstatic sermonification.
