Remember that you can't always choose what type of cargo you pick up! Sometimes you can pick up cargo that is illegal drugs, guns or slaves. This can affect your legal status - there is an eject button for your cargo but I am not sure if this allows you to toggle between the cargo you would like to get rid of!

Cargo does NOT affect your legal status unless you leave the system. So you can sell any illegal cargo that you have scooped in your present system (main station or any dockable ship/rock hermit) and make a good profit. Only if you leave the main station again having illegal cargo on board your legal status will go to fugitive. If you jump out of the system you will be offender.
And yes, you can toggle between your cargos. The default key for that is SHIFT-R. Then eject with D.

if you buy at a station too, that can affect you. i recently arrived at Ensoreus and they - unusually - have 32t of Narcotics for 1.2 a ton! i bought them all and when i looked at my F5 it said Fugitive. soon as i left the station a GalCop Vampire started hassling me, so needless to say it was a fairly tense 15 secs till the Witchdrive kicked in! when i arrived at Isinor i was Offender. sold em for 95.6 a ton, canny profit margin
So does this mean that your legal status will automatically go back down to clean after you have sold all your illicit cargo and jumped to a new system?
I thought you had to use the old "escape pod" or "jump to new galaxy" trick to get a clean record.

Ok, I should have said: SCOOPED cargo does not affect your legal status. Also selling it does you no harm. Only buying illegal items at the station makes you fugitive (offender after jumping) and scooped illegal items make you offender after jumping. Now clear?
@ rollen: No, after you have sold your illegal goods you will not be clean immediatly. But you also don't have to use your escape pod or jump to another galaxy. Your legal status is represented by a counter that will slowly drop with every jump you make, as long as you don't behave criminally again. So eventually, after a couple of jumps, it will reach zero = clean record.
You could perhaps think there is an amnesty for minor offences every now and then.

Making several local jumps should clean the legal status (much cheaper then the galatic merry go round). Used to be the local do-gooder because I'm trying to complete assassins guild I've changed tact and will eliminate most ships even for a tonne of textiles! Still trying to save up for that shiny new boa class cruiser though would be happier if there were more expensive ships that are a) faster and b) better shielded
It's a fine line between clever and stupid
You can clean your status by using the escape pod, but you'll lose any cargo you have (sell it first). If you are in a hurry, that's the quickest way, and it only costs an escape pod, best to do it where you can buy an immediate replacement though!
