Re: New splash screen and icon
Boner!
Question for the splash screen I suppose is how much do we want the logo to stand out from the background?
I think that the grey does just enough and keeps the attention on the logo itself rather than the outline.
Re: New splash screen and icon
The outline on this last one does get a bit lost in the clouds and atmosphere of the planet.

Re: New splash screen and icon
Well yeah, but because it stands out against the black of space it almost looks like it emerges/leans forward from the planet.
That's why there's a double outline (one dark/one light) of course, as against any background one could get lost but not both.
Check out cbr's planet and use of shadow...

Re: New splash screen and icon
The github project's avatar has been switched to the new icon. If you still see the old avatar when visiting the page, try refreshing the browser cache (Ctrl+F5 should do it).
Edit: The debug console will also need its icon updated to the new design.

Re: New splash screen and icon
Nice!
But that also means we want to update dependent icons:
- wiki
- forum
- documentation
- related projects
When looking at OoliteStarter now the question would be whether I go for an orange icon or for a splashscreen that better matches the new logo...

AC, phkb: any ideas? I am open for anything and by far no artist.

Re: New splash screen and icon
The new logo looks great. There is no doubt the future icons derived from it will look great. Majority rules and all that. Completely understood and much appreciated.
But... once my devious little mind figured out what file to replace to use a custom Splash Screen (mentioned by Cody on page 2 of this thread) the challenge was on. The biggest problem was making it out of all of the submissions posted in this thread. That did not stand in my way for long as it just became a matter of selecting whatever struck me as the most appropriate since it was, at the time, for my use only. The first major decision was that it had to fill my desktop screen at 1920x1080. After that it just became a matter of did the skills exist in my brain and hands to actually make it a reality. Well the thing turned out really well, much better then expected. It does weigh in at almost 8 MB due to the splash screen needing to be a .bmp image as opposed to a .png image. Rather strange is this given Oolite's general use of .png images for almost everything else. That 8 MB's plus the 1920x1080 size are the reasons for not posting the image here. The link below will take you to my box account where you can see and download the currently finished product should you choose to do so. It may change again in the future depending on spur of the moment decisions. Consider it a template and do with it whatever you please. Much Thanks to all of those whose ideas were used in creating this monster. Opinions are always welcome.

Re: New splash screen and icon
It's a pretty good splash screen, without changing anything. I probably wouldn't go with an orange variant on the logo, as the image has a predominance of orange already.
I just did a quick look at putting the red logo on the existing image, and I have to say I think the red logo adds to the drama. I'd probably recommend doing that, and keeping it simple!
Nite Owl, below are all the resources I used to create the splash screen image, including a 1920x1080 version of the planet image, which would mean you wouldn't have to blur the edges of the planet in your splash screen.Nite Owl wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 7:10 pmThat 8 MB's plus the 1920x1080 size are the reasons for not posting the image here. Gimp version of splash screen project: splash.xcf (I have no idea if this will work!)
Paint.net version of splash screen project: splash.pdn
Planet image used in splash screen: oolite-planet-for-splash.png
Re: New splash screen and icon
Thank You for the Images. The tinkering will now commence.
Edit
Well that was easier then supposed. Thanks to phkb's generosity a new version is up at the link in my previous post. Much less blurriness around the planet edges due to not having to create parts of them by copying and pasting other parts of them. The star field also looks much better for the same reasons.

Re: New splash screen and icon
I've tried uploading a new version for one of the icons: "oolite-logo3.png", but I can't get the pages it appears on (for example: Oolite Main Page) to display it. Is there something we need to reset on the wiki server to get this to load? I'm wondering whether it might be simpler to load each new version as a new name (rather that uploading a new version of an existing image) to avoid this scenario.
Edit: OK, these are the files I've updated:
Oolite-IconBW.png
Oolite-logo3.png
Oolite-oxp-icon.png.
None of them are showing on the pages they're used on.

These are not automatic replaced, has/does the wiki rename(d)/rescale(d) these?

This one is replaced...

Re: New splash screen and icon
Try clearing the browser cache to display new images.
Re: New splash screen and icon
It seems like thumbnails aren't regenerated upon uploading a new version of an image. I ran the manual purge action on the image description pages, which should clear old thumbnails (though you still need to clear the page cache on your device), and looks like it helped.

, while Oolite Main Page uses (if omit some template substitution) [[Image:oolite-logo3.png|128px|link]], that use thumbnails.
