Excellent carpet rollout. Much obliged.
How great that so many people have kept on chipping away with passion at every aspect of this body of work. I'll just have to begin to soak it in slowly, and someday be up to speed.

With the greatest of pleasure..
Thank you.
Hm. I have this exactly, so the issue is elsewhere then. I'll get to the bottom of it eventually.

On another note, I saw an OXZ of my old hoOpy casino in the in-game menu, found the ship and docked, but alas no gambling action, just normal docked status page. Has this not been working recently, or could it potentially be a conflict with something from all the other OXPs i grabbed?
Gambling games can be found from station interfaces (f4). At least they should be there :D

Yes, it may have been there the first time, I was maybe too rattled that the oldskool instant prompt didn't happen.

Kind of late but welcome back, my next upload would include the Moray Transport in both of your OXP's, it's just an override to Griff's designs. Are you ok with that ?

Yes, certainly. If I was Young Murgh with the all savvy and energy of my heyday I would have rounded up all my old OXPs and stuck in a modern CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 slip. I think they should be freely customised to behave in just the way one wants one's own game.

...
I hope that this is a reasonably honest synopsis of the current state of affairs
There was one more thing I wondered about (which I'll add on here instead of starting a new thread, in the event that such a thread is well-established).

Is there anything published in the way of a tutorial that documents the process of fixing/mending/improving old and outdated models, textures, shipdata etc into this current, spiffy age? Has Griff or someone else with such skills shown their work in progress with comparative before/after pics and explanations?

Back in the day Giles did some great tutorials (I haven't been able to find exactly the one I'm thinking of) which somehow let us to feel we would be able to jump into it. I have found F C Textures from 2006 and Smivs' texture tutorial from 2011, but wondered if something using the very latest magic exists. In any case, I suspect it wouldn't leave me with the giddy optimism that filled me in 2004.

It probably won't come to anything, but I had a thought that maybe I could try, on at least one of my old boats that annoyed me upon seeing it in present day, to have a go at doing it right.

Have a look at THIS THREAD by another_commander. Older models should be okay as the new lighting system seems to be about textures, maps, shaders, and their appropriate code in shipdata.plist. Still do not understand most of it myself so another_commander is the one to turn to for questions as this is his work within the core game code.

So I bought myself a Thrustmaster HOTAS 4. I guess I'll have a go at making it all work tomorrow. So what you said before, can I interpret this as I could get this Touch Portal to work in tandem with my HOTAS? I must ask, will my side device then, whether I use an iPhone or i can get my slightly too old iPad to do it, need to be bluetooth connected?
So?

What's your new HOTAS like? Did you get it to work? Are you happy with it?

And did you manage anything useful with TouchPortal?

And just generally... what do you think of all the changes to Oolite? a_c_'s work on the graphics? Griff's new ships & stations? Cim's work on rejigging the piracy and the AI's? Which oxp's have you tried? And what do you think of them? Does anything excite you about the current version of Oolite?

One of the major changes is in the materials setting.

Code: Select all

materials =
		{
			"aquatica_hammerhead_front.png" =
			{
				emission_map = "cbr_universal_e.png";
				normal_map = "cbr_universal_n.png";
				specular_map = "cbr_universal_sg.png";
				gloss = 0.5;
			};
                 };
The new possibilities compared to older models are with the specular map and the gloss setting.
I do not think there is a 'simple' tutorial how to use them.

Image

In this example I used reasonable simple grayscale values in the specularmap (spec in rgb / gloss in alpha) to create a more classic lighted look...

I was afraid of and expected that. Thanks for the example. I'll just have to look at more before/after cases and slowly get wiser.

Ach it's still in the box. I played around a little, was about to start cracking my knuckles and go for the configuration, but my macBookPro has an annoying wifi/bluetooth issue that I keep putting off getting fixed. I am in a way still awkward with the keys so I thought I should be more fluent before I make customising decisions. Which goes to the second part of your questions.

I think the new Oolite is awesome but also overwhelming. Many things that I learn (in Olite as in life) are a bit accidental, so it takes time, specifically the new tech I've tried to get used to. Hyperzooming radars and tracking cameras. Fumbling for keys in the middle of combat is a bad look.

I have some 80 OXPs going, and many are obviously there to make everything more beautiful, planets and hurling metal. Many OXPs I still don't know what do yet, I suspect await among all the equipment I haven't yet bought. There is a lot that I already have seen that is sufficiently exciting. I have tried (maybe too briefly) some OXPs that broaden the game with news and emails and such, but they detract from the more quiet game I like, so they're a pass for now.

That is the thing, that I can make the game exactly as I want it. I was just before looking at Giles' early developer's logs from his early days of coding in 2004, and came over a post that I remembered. One day, he had implemented –should we want for music– code to trigger an iTunes playlist Oolite-Flight, and one for Oolite-Docking, and when I saw that he was making that type of game it was another affirmation that Oolite is very special in terms of personal user control, at least from any other game I've experienced. So yes, I'm excited that the spirit is still there.

So the HOTAS just plugs in (you will need a Thunderbolt/USB adaptor). No wifi. No bluetooth.

I've found three things about it.
1) Immersion. Massively improves things. I actually sometimes feel that I'm really flying a space ship (especially with the superb graphics).
2) Docking and combat. Definitely improves things (my combat skills are execrable).
3) It really improves both my enjoyment and my game. There is a definite sense of relish if I know that I'm going to be using it...

I've seen a fair number of posts by a fair number of other people emphasising the importance of the Joystick for combat. If you were flying a million pound airplane you would not be doing so with just a keyboard... so unless you need to pay homage to your hard-earned skills in Classic Elite, I would not worry...

Personally I put all the missile stuff on the Elgato as I find it far too confusing for unlabelled buttons on the joystick. But that's me. My current configuration is a little different from that shown on the wiki.

Joystick: No yaw, just use two of the three axes for pitch & roll. Trigger is laser. Hat is for the 4 F1-F4 views. L1 is targeting/toggle ID ("r"). L3 is second (offensive) fast activation for fast targeting (currently the Vimana HUD's Target Filtering System - usually Phkb's Fast Targeting System). R3 is for toggling weapons on/off.

Throttle: for Speed (shock! horror!). Paddle/Rudder on back is for Yaw.
R2 and L2 on back are defensive. R2 for ECM. L2 for Retro Rockets (usually barrel roll governor. If the Teamaker could make a decent brew of Lapsang Souchong, I'd go for that instead...).
The buttons under my thumb are for the drives. Top button (square) is witchfuel injectors ("i"), middle button (x) is Torus drive, bottom button (circle) is Witchspace/Hyper drive. Fourth button (triangle) is precision toggle.

The buttons on the base (PS, share, options) are unassigned.

So I currently use no buttons for moving the compass between the various beacons or for docking.

Elgato's buttonbox does the rest (3 profiles for docked (basically for navigating the F3-F8 screens), green/yellow condition flight (for docking, organising MFD's & oxp equipment ("n", "b", "N" & "ctrl-N"), and for red alert combat ie missiles), so I never have to use the keyboard unless I want to save my game or take a snap shot.

I have a sense that this has to fit my own style of play. There are a few of these modern contraptions I haven't integrated yet. I thought at least I could dedicate some buttons to missile lock, toggle and fire. There are so many buttons, there must be a solution. But, one still has to know what to press in the heat of battle. .

Depends on the antiquity of your apple...

Mine is only a year old. No USB sockets. Just 2 thunderbolt sockets (which can double as power sockets).
