It would be nice if there were a comparison of the visuals of the various ships available in vanilla vs. the replacer OXPs. Unless I'm missing something... I see there's an image of Griff's replacers here:
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Griff_Industries
But I don't see an equivalent one for the vanilla versions in 1.90.
To clarify: I do see that there are images showing on each ship page, comparing the versions. But it would be nice if there were a single page with rows and columns.

Re: Ship image matrix on the wiki?
I guess the bottom line is I'm trying to figure out how all of the various retextures interrelate - specifically Griff's versus the *current* defaults. Griff's ship retextures appear to be from 2010, but they appear to have better light (specular) interactions than the vanilla versions, which according to the wiki have been in place since 2014. Unless the images of those ships don't have lighting applied...?

Re: Ship image matrix on the wiki?
So...
I don't really do the ships. I don't use the oxp's (apart from a paltry handful - liners, generation ships, behemoths, enhanced vipers, galactic navy - that sort of thing), and Griff's magnificent oeuvre is well beyond my ken. He's produced zillions of ships over the years, but I have no real handle on how his various ship-sets fit together. All I've really done is add links and ignorantly add pages for ship.oxp's I've dug up - and Montana05 had to show me how. I know that Montana05 and Griff will have a much better grasp of this, and there are others who also will.
As regards comparisons, there is some older stuff, but nothing recent.
Maybe look at Category:Oolite Ship Lists & Category:Retextures OXPs? They should have links to the slightly more helpful pages.
I'm sorry that I can't be of more help.
Edited to add:
The most recent shipset using all of a_c's graphics wizardry is Oolite v1.88 Base Shipset Normal and Specular/Gloss Maps (by Griff & a_c). But it is just for retexturing the vanilla game shipset.

Fair enough! Maybe at some point I will put together a matrix graphic of everything and upload it for use.

Is it possible ? If one invests enough time, it certainly is, but how comprehensive would it be ?arquebus wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 1:06 amThis suggestion is for the wiki... which means of course you know who this suggestion is directed at

Besides that, a lot of pictures on the wiki are tweaked and not taken out of the game play there are a lot of textures, re-textures and re-textures of re-textures. Only for the Griff designs, I could start with Gsagostinho's texture packs and phkb's factory paintjobs, not to forget his own improvements and a_c's additional maps. Just to make it more confusing, there do exist ships with textures mixed out of all 3 of them.
For starters, you might could try to look at them in Gallery.OXP but keep in mind that the lighting will depend on the sun where your ship currently stays.

Re: Ship image matrix on the wiki?
think of the 'griff 'retextures' more like a mod that will add some effects to the ships not implemented in the standard game, the oxp pre-dates the new lovely metallic lighting in Oolite unfortunately, so you loose that and go back to a more basic "specular intensity" texture based lighting, it sort of looks OK, but it's a lot duller than default oolite though, the ships can be hard to see.arquebus wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 1:12 amI guess the bottom line is I'm trying to figure out how all of the various retextures interrelate - specifically Griff's versus the *current* defaults. the griff oxp adds some special effects to the ships at the expense of needing more texture memory and graphics card thinking time:
1. colour engine glows that react to ship speed, a laser temperatur heat glow dependant on laser temp, a hull heat glow dependant on ship temperature (actually hull temp effects might actually be in the standard game)
2. 'hull lights' that react to ships current alert level
3. randomised decals on NPC ships and a decal on the player ship that can be swapped it for a custom image (by changing a png image file in the oxz)
4. grime & dust appearing on ships when they need maintenance - possibly not on all the ships, think it might just be some of the later ones that have this
5. random paint scheme colour on NPC's and player ships - there's an amazing repaint oxp out there too that lets you change the paint colour on the player ship, ah can't remember the name - respray i think although there are more than one OXP with that name, i think the author is Captain Murphy ? has a smurf for a forum avatar i think edit: found it: https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.ph ... 43#p174243
if you want to add a few in, i think the cool ones are the moray and the thargoid ones, both look especially cool when they get angry, the rock hermit looks OK with some light animation along the docking tunnel, maybe the police vipers have a fake reflection effect on them - i'd probably not bother with the rest, i think they look better when drawn by standard oolite and Another_Commander's spec/gloss pack that Cholmondely mentioned above:

Re: Ship image matrix on the wiki?
Have a look HERE for a method to use both Griff's ships and another commander's ships in game at the same time. Both are great additions to the game and should not be missed. Honorable Mention must also go to gsagostinho's many texture packs and phkb's multiple Factory Paint Jobs in order to add even more variety to the core ships. These Honorable Mentions are best used with the SHIP RESPRAY OXZ by phkb so that you can also change the texture on your own ship. Beyond that the many OXZ ships out and about on the Wiki and the Expansion Manager are far too numerous to mention them all here but they do make for an ever expansive set of choices.
edit: changed "base ships" to "core ships" to avoid confusion.

Re: Ship image matrix on the wiki?
That's the clincher! If randomised decals could be incorporated into the core ships...
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
