Lave is Earth OXP (8k Textures)

Post by another_commander »

Here is an OXP that takes Lave and turns it into Earth. A similar OXP had been posted as a test case of the new custom planet favilities in Oolite in the Progress thread a few weeks back, but this one has big textures. Very big, actually. The resolution of the diffuse + city lights and normal + specular maps included is 8192 x 4096. This creates extremely detailed surfaces and makes the planet look sharp and awesome from any position or distance. Also the normspec map has been edited so that the clouds do not get specular highlights for increased realism.

To install, just download it from the download link found in the OXP's page on the wiki and place the oxz file inside your AddOns folder.

Oh yeah, this one requires a powerful graphics card and a reasonably performant system, or you will notice both long load times and an FPS drop if you attempt to run it on low-end hardware.

The textures used come from NASA's Blue Marble collection and Solar Textures.

And of course, some pics are definitely in order:

Has lockdown turned you into an OXPer, Admiral?

And you don't happen to have a Light Version of these textures?
You know, for "powerless-computers"?

Not at the moment, but I'll try to whip up something with scaled down to 4k textures tomorrow and upload a med-res version.

<grins> You'll be needing a Wiki page soon.

A demo video of a journey around Earth, recorded in-game from Oolite, boasting the aforementioned textures, covered with Scott Buckley's cinematic compositions, can be found at https://youtu.be/8UDnB3uIhUk.

Dim those lights around you, sit back and enjoy, while sipping your favorite drink.

Version 1.1 is up. This version fixes the normal map used so lighting does not look weird from certain angles.

Download from either the in-game manager or the OXP wiki page.

Turns out v1.1 was borked as well - mountains were turned into valleys and vice versa, making everything look even weirder than before. Terribly sorry about that, version 1.2 is now up and hopefully this is the good, final one.

As always, the download is available from the in-game expansion pack manager and from the OXP wiki page.

That'd turn Olympus Mons into one helluva big pit!
