i had to register just to say how much i hate the game and everything related to it at this very moment... i do hope you understand me, 'cause i've just spent 45 minutes of my misarable life trying to dogfight four or five pirates... and by the end of those 45 minutes of chasing a single ship around, feeling like a failed noob and thinking if it's just me sucking so much at this game i finally managed to kill him... and of course i finally got a missile up my tailpipe =/

I'm sorry your first impressions of the game haven't been good. Oolite is a hard game at the start - you're in an under-equipped ship in a dangerous galaxy that doesn't consider you special. Can I encourage you to read these ![[EliteWiki]](/images/elitewikismall.png)
tips on combat? They can really help, especially in the early stages of the game.
There have been a lot of attempts to try to balance the early game difficulty without neutering the entire game experience. Some of these have made it into the game itself (you should have a new game "Easy Start" option, which puts you in a safer system than Lave, with more credits to play with). There are some OXP's around as well that try to balance things, to a greater or lesser extent. The wiki link above includes links to some OXP options for making the game easier.
Some other options:
Start Choices and Modern Start both provide starting game options with more default equipment to help with the early game.
Population Control is my attempt to balance the game by making safe systems a bit safer. This OXP is in beta at the moment, so you won't find it on the download manager. It will need to be manually installed.

That you were able to defeat five pirates at this stage is a testament to your skill. Keep at it!
It can be kinda slow at the beginning, but I think you will enjoy it when you begin getting some upgrades. The power that comes with the beam laser and the fuel injectors will be a sweet reward for all that trading and blasting!
As far as the specific issues you mentioned, we’ve all had that one annoying guy that JUST WON’T DIE and then finally pops a missile at us. It’s annoying, I know. If you find yourself chasing each other in a circle, try throttling down a bit.
