I think what Griff says could easily be accomplished with a shader. The rings OXP simply projects shader magic into a plane-like object which is added around the planet. So I think that similarly, one could add a plane at the entrance of all stations and then use a shader to project the energy barrier. I think that could look so good!

Today I was messing around with the atmosphere shader trying making all atmospheres have a more neutral bluish-whitish colour regardless of the star colour, as well as trying to make the terminator more reddish. This is what I got so far:
