I seem to remember that when I was playing Elite for the Apple many years ago that there was a key that would reverse all the axis settings for the joystick so that when you were looking out the back of the ship, you didn't have to try to remember to do everything backwards.
When I used a joystick on the BBC version, I simply turned it upside down. Now I often turn tail and use my rear lasers at the start of the fight; it keeps me in the habit of doing everything backwards.
