Well, given that they appear to have been the backing orchestra for The Eagles on one album the obvious suspect is Journey of the Sorcerer, which is of course the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme music. Is that what you were looking for?

First clue - I'm looking for an answer which is also a story title (and an explanation of what the answer means)

Well, I thought I knew this so I checked on Wikipedia; it turned out that I was right to think that Peter Nicholls (The Science Fiction Encyclopaedia) is an Australian but some of the other details don't match. I now know the correct answer, but I'll leave that to someone else since I had to check other winners of the award to find it.
