If you've ever seen a DeLorean up close you'll know they're nothing special. By which I mean they're pretty ordinary. By which I mean they're bad. Gutting them for projects like that is a suitable fate for them.

Now, HOW IS THAT A SELF-DRIVING CAR, IF IT ONLY DRIVES IN A CIRCLE?

One day, the software used for this will be available as an add-in for standard self driving cars...

GEEKOUT!

DeLorean with the Blue Danube?

Oh, yes, the DeLorean was a shitty car, or so I heard. BUT... you just have to imagine the scene where the team was looking for a cheap used car for this test and found this for sale... :D

Not really. There's a dealership in the US that specializes in them, so whenever a movie producer or university engineering department looking for a car that looks distinctive wants one they know who to call. Mechanically they're all completely clapped out by now, and not worth restoring because they weren't good to start with, but the stainless steel bodies haven't rusted so they're ideal for this sort of project.

This precisely describes my reaction to the only time I ever saw one in real life:-
