Who wired this ship, anyway?
So there I am all set to jump to Witchspace when I get a sad little bleep from the computer: "Witchdrive malfunction!" and I stay where I am. Better than dropping out halfway in the middle of nowhere and a bunch of Thargoids rolling out their own special welcome mat, but... the only systems damage was to the Tea Maker.
What's the Tea Maker doing connected to the Witchdrive?
After sorting out the problem, Commander Gersen resolves to swing by the spaceport and have a quiet word with the cowboy that bodged this horrible lash-up of a ship together.

Sounds like a voltage surge or something. Tea maker probably isn't as well protected as other systems.Malacandra wrote:So there I am all set to jump to Witchspace when I get a sad little bleep from the computer: "Witchdrive malfunction!" and I stay where I am. It's a little-known secret, but actually, the Tea Maker is wired in as a high-tech fuse.. in order to protect more delicate equipment from power surges, such as ffutures mentions.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

No, if it's anything like real life then it's the job of the most expensive technology on the ship to protect a threepenny fuse by blowing first.patndave wrote:Well you learn something new - I thought that was the toaster's job.

Which makes me wonder if anyone has worked on some ship interiors - after all we know the size of the Cobra & its cargo capacity etc, so it shouldnt be too hard to work out an onboard layout - could be toggled to a view/key-stroke - would be nice to be able to see the insides - all smoking and burnt after the bloomin teasmaid blows up again or the toaster catches fire....

Re: Who wired this ship, anyway?
Oh you have no idea how real that actually is. Though a lot of the time a 2 penny fast blow fuse would have saved the day. Instead all the fancy very expensive protection systems go into melt down taking rediculously more expensive system with it.Malacandra wrote:No, if it's anything like real life then it's the job of the most expensive technology on the ship to protect a threepenny fuse by blowing first.patndave wrote:Well you learn something new - I thought that was the toaster's job.
And of course when you go to put the kettle on (tea maker too expensive) to have a cuppa while you wonder how to fix domino effect catastrophy, No power and damn kettle is plastic, so can't even use smoldering remains to heat the kettle!
Moral of this;
Always have a steel kettle.
As every being in the ooniverse knows, a nice cuppa cures all. Even the dreaded "Press Space"
