...or use the excellent Start Choices addon.
tbh I was at the same conclusion (The beginning of the game is too slow -- ) in the very beginning.
Now (still a young player) I'm drifting in the opposite direction. Giving a Cobra Mk III is pretty big deal.
The beginning of the game is too slow -- any workaround?

Left dock and headed toward the sun. As I left the mass-lock effect of the station I noticed a small ship just at the periphery of my sensors. While glancing at the ship I noticed my torus drive was ready to go. I hit J and was off toward the sun. On my way I encountered an asteroid. I held my breath as I aimed my ship fairly close to it. My Torus shut down with a mass-lock warning. Shortly after passing the asteroid, the all-clear green light returned and away I went.
Perfect execution! I simply enjoyed the idea that a ship doesn't necessarily have to lock me down like some kind of punishment. I'm sure that this might have not much of an impact if I fly straight toward a ship on torus engines. But this is what I'd expect. The effect of this OXP is subtle but very desirable and equally appreciated.
Eschew obfuscation.

Does that kill Codys docking method, using Thorus Drive on Asteroid Mines?
