Elite: TNK
<chortles> Ian Bell gets in on the thirtieth anniversary celebrations of Elite with this, apparently.
Obviously, I cannot vouch for the veracity of that article.

Re: Elite: TNK
Just spotted that myself and headed over here. Is he *allowed* to do that now? I thought Elite copyright firmly belonged to Frontier after the notification about buying rights in this...
Cheers,
Drew.

Re: Elite: TNK
Yes, it could be problematic - but you'd think that it can do FD no harm whatsoever. In fact, it can only add to the hype!
Mind you, once corporate lawyers get involved all sanity seems to evaporate - 'twere ever thus!

Re: Elite: TNK
I'm glad we sent him the plasma globe and other sundries.
It was nice to remember the elite thing was not a one man show.
I'm sure there is enough joy to go round without things getting all Nasty again.

Haha this has made me laugh. The thing is its been easy to get hold of Elite TNK for years anyway, just in the same way you can get nearly anything on the Internet! DB never really got rid of it altogether...

Indeed.. as I've mentioned before, it's easier to find E:TNK on the 'net, than it is to find out just exactly what happened that got it pulled from distribution..Pleb wrote:The thing is its been easy to get hold of Elite TNK for years anyway, just in the same way you can get nearly anything on the Internet! Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
Re: Elite: TNK
Woot woot, color me interested but not enough to abandon Oolite in favor of TNK.

Re: Elite: TNK
Getting rid of E-TNK was never DB/Frontier's aim. Getting rid of its open source-code was far more important.
The key was to stop anyone not IB, DB, or Frontier from making money with their intellectual property.

Re: Elite: TNK
I wonder if this will still happen, doesn't seem to be up at Ian Bell's site yet, I remember trying Elite TNK ages ago, but the build I found (v1.1a) had some weird control bug in it if I remember correctly, I think the ship constantly rolled to the left or something, I did find an older build that worked OK but then I found Oolite and switched to playing that instead

Re: Elite: TNK
Tried it for a while, but nostalgia trip aside I really don't want to play it again. Oolite is infinitely better!

True that.ffutures wrote:Tried it for a while, but nostalgia trip aside I really don't want to play it again. Oolite is infinitely better!
And if I want a nostalgia trip, I start the real thing on my C64 (or emulator).
...and keep it under lightspeed!
