A couple of problems with trunk
I'm using oolite-trunk-1.80.0.3d0cf30-dev.x64, and its wonderful, but I've noticed the following. (Sorry if they've been reported before.)
(1) After I launched from a rockhermit, my front view (only that one) went grey, intermittently, for quite a while.
(2) My taskbar popped up sometimes, despite being in full screen mode. This seems to be caused by the conjunction of Oolite and a program called '7+ Taskbar tweaker' (version 4.5.0.4). I don't know which program to blame here. When I quit the 'tweaker', though, all is fine with Oolite.
EDIT: problem (1) might be caused by the program mentioned in (2).

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
From the 7+ Taskbar Tweaker site (emphasis mine):
Anything is possible if a third party program injects unknown DLL code into Explorer and I believe we now know that Oolite is innocent here.7+ Taskbar FAQ wrote:There are no registry keys for the options it provides. The tweaker does that by injecting a DLL to explorer, hooking/subclassing/some other methods of the dark side.

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
@ UK_Eliter: It looks like the guy who created the 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is pretty actively working on the program, and interacting with the users on his blog.. it may be worth taking it up with him..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
Actually, the greyness problem - or is it a (dodgy?) feature correlates so strongly with the presence of the system sun on my screen, that I think Oolite is responsible.

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
Simplest way to list the AddOns is probably to just post your Latest.log.
Edit: Ummm.. It's not just the new "sun glare" feature, by any chance, is it?
If so, while not to everyone's taste, it certainly doesn't count as "dodgy".. it's just more realistic..
And on the bright side (pun intended) it affects NPCs as well.. if you are positioned between them and the sun, you'll have a significant combat advantage over them.
If it's not to your liking, Spara has released a Glare Filter OXZ which will improve things for you.

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
Thanks Diziet. It might be the sun glare feature - though it is rather grey. It tends to look like this:
Although when I used the Windows screenshot function, as against Oolite's, I got this sort of thing (sic!):
EDIT: The image is really like that, i.e. the big grey expanses are really in the image (rather than an artefact of positing a screenshot here). But, to repeat, I do not see those big expanses in the game.
I got these same results whether or not I was running the aforementioned Taskbar Tweaker.

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
Does it look the same on any and all systems you visit? Sun glare is supposed to be following the sun color and should not be grey everywhere (actually, it is not even grey in your case; it is white sun light getting mixed with the black of space and the sun light intensity is related to the distance to sun). Latest log top part, where gfx drivers are reported, might be useful.
Also, I am not sure what to make of the screenshot part. Is it that the entire desktop appears grey while the Oolite window appears kind of corrupted or something else? If so, I would strongly recommend checking out the drivers in use and maybe upgrading or downgrading them to a version that works. This is the only case of such a problem being reported, so I would venture to guess that it is isolated to your machine and therefore it is most likely hardware specific.
Oh, and please try it also without any OXPs installed. Does it still look the same?

Maybe also post your full Latest.log. The section on graphics might provide a clue as to what's going on.

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
Not that I think it's the source of your problems.. but you have a lot of duplicate AddOns there..
You have both OXP and OXZ versions of these installed:
Military Fiasco
Kirin
Missiles and Bombs
Random Hits
Flight Log
Fuel Station
Fuel Tank
And I may well have missed one or two. You should delete the OXP versions.

The screen never actually looks like the screenshot: I never see those grey expanses - so it is strange that they are in the screenshot, no? And I took more than one screenshot, and they were all like that. Actually, some of them were pure black.another_commander wrote:Also, I am not sure what to make of the screenshot part.
I will report back here shortly on that. EDIT: yes, it does!another_commander wrote:Oh, and please try it also without any OXPs installed. Does it still look the same?

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
For me, it has to be something related to your graphics drivers or some other program or utility getting in the way. I can get desktop screenshots (using the Print Screen key) with the game running in a window and they are just fine here and I am on a relatively crappy Intel HD Graphics. No greys, no blacks, no nothing. However, I may be misunderstanding what exactly you are referring to. Can you please let us know how exactly you go about taking screenshots with the "Windows screenshot function"? I imagine screenshots from within Oolite are fine?

This is a screenshot from within Oolite (and indeed an image that I posted above):another_commander wrote:For me, it has to be something related to your graphics drivers or some other program or utility getting in the way. That screenshot is fine, in the sense that it captures accurately how things look within Oolite. Or rather it captures how things look in Oolite whenever I face a sun; at other times in Oolite, everything is as I expect it to be (i.e. less grey). Now, is this the sun glare feature? Maybe? If so, I wasn't expecting that grey colour.
As to using Windows itself to take screenshots: I do it in the standard Windows 8 way. That is to say, I press Win-Prt Scrn. The resulting screenshots look very weird - partly because and is not what I saw within the game.
Is it significant that both (1) the internal screenshots / what I actually see within the game, and (2) the weird Windows screenshots, both feature the colour grey so heavily (but in different ways)?

Re: A couple of problems with trunk
Yes, that first screenshot shows sun glare. The grey is the result of white sunlight color getting mixed with the black color of space and it is not very intense because the sun is at a long distance from the player. It can be colors other than grey too, depending on the actual color of the sun in a system, as seen in earlier pics in Diziet Sma's post. Note also, if you start flying towards the sun you will notice glare becoming stronger as you approach while facing it (i.e. the sun light starts becoming dominant) and this can be seen best at high TAF. See Dizzie's third screenshot for what it looks like when you are really close to the sun. Also, the "grey" should fade to black quickly as you turn away from the sun and its light and be at its maximum for a given distance when directly looking at the sun. Intensity of sun light creating glare is dependent not only on distance, but also on the angle in which the sun is viewed. Just looking at the still images, I would say that it works as expected.UK_Eliter wrote:That screenshot is fine, in the sense that it captures accurately how things look within Oolite. If you don't like the glare, you can disable it completely for your ship by setting the shipdata key
sun_glare_filter
to the value of 1, meaning complete filtering of glare.Having quickly googled it, Win-PrtScr saves a desktop snapshot to disk. I don't know why it looks like that for you, but I don't think that it has to do with Oolite. For me (Win 7), PrtScr works fine. I can't test with the Win key as that functionality is Win 8 only. Maybe someone else using Windows 8 could provide feedback. However, I still don't think Oolite has to do anything with it and it's more likely gfx driver related. Is there any way to check how it does with other OpenGL games? As to using Windows itself to take screenshots: I do it in the standard Windows 8 way. That is to say, I press Win-Prt Scrn. Re: A couple of problems with trunk
@another_commander
Thanks for the explanation. EDIT: still, so far, I've never seen a sun glare with the colours in two of the screenshots posted by Diziet. It's always grey. A problem with my graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 5570) settings perhaps?
I suppose I could find another OpenGL game and try it. Oolite is the only game on my system at present.

Are we sure there is no OXP influencing sun colors anywhere? Let's try this:UK_Eliter wrote:still, so far, I've never seen a sun glare with the colours in two of the screenshots posted by Diziet. It's always grey. A problem with my graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 5570) settings perhaps?
Remove all OXPs, launch from Lave and hyperspace to Reorte. Turn towards the sun.
Does it look like this?
Now restart the game again without OXPs and jump from Lave to Orerve. Face the sun. Does it look like this?
