Help with default pitch
Hi.
New here, yesterday I installed the repository version on Ubuntu (1.75.3), all because of nice memories on playing Elite some 20yrs ago.
What I cannot digest: I cannot force the Cobra to fly straight. The "slighlty shifted zero position" of pitch makes her to slightly climb, so, to fly at least a bit straight I have to counter-thrust (dive) a bit every moment. Even if I brake to 0, or activate hyperdrive, the Cobra keeps rotating round the pitch axis. To ilustrate it, if I do nothing, after un-docking makes the Cobra a loop and crashes back to the Coriolis station.
IS THIS THE DEFAULT BEHAVIOR?
Hope not, I find it neither real nor playable, from 20 tries I landed just once, and I don't want to imagine fighting with this handicap...
Can I disable this behavior somehow? Can some "default pitch" value be set? I googled and searched this forum, but found no simple answer.
Thx in advance
M.

Re: Help with default pitch
Repository version shouldn't be used, its well out of date. Instead get the latest Linux version, v1.77.1 from here: http://www.oolite.org.
As to your specific problem, I don't know, but someone will probably be along soon who does?
Edit: I would say that behaviour is not standard. Are you playing with a joystick?

Re: Help with default pitch
No joystick. Laptop keyboard, default keys, I didn't touch the key configuration.
edit: removed repo version, purged, installed most current one from oolite.org. behaviour persists.
redefined keys (replaced cursor arrows with okl;), behaviour persists.
mouse mode - with rightclick ship finally stays quiet, and i can fly straight. cannot get used to it. when i switch back to keyboard, weird looping behaviour returns

Re: Help with default pitch
You seem to somehow have mouse control mode activated, judging from the fact that right mouse click centers controls. You will need to deactivate it using Shift+M and that should retrurn you to the standard keyboard control.
As you understand, the behaviour you are witnessing is non-default and I am not certain how it has been activated on game start up. You normally need to press Shift+M to get there.

Re: Help with default pitch
Thx for the tip, but I switched to mouse mode on purpose, to test, if the reseting works at least there. It does. After switching back to keyboard control, Cobra immediately starts to pitch again.
I didn't activate this behaviour. Installed, F1'd and got it.
On my HUD, if I stop touching the controls, the pitch indicator doesn't return to the middle of the field, stays slightly right from center, it's quite good recognizable, because roll indicator returns to center.
Is there something in Config folder to look at?
Or, possibly, something in GNUstep?

Re: Help with default pitch
Can you please post Latest.log after launching from the station and exiting the game (Shift+Esc or Shift+Q)?
I found this report in the Ubuntu forums. There could be something wrong with how the OS is detecting the mouse. It may be worth trying the tip at the last post.

Re: Help with default pitch
Thank you very much, it did the trick.
I already kind of wondered, why Latest.log says that joystick was found, but didn't figure out, that the problem goes so deep.
Anyway, Ubuntu users with pitch/rotate/yaw issue might be exactly in my situation.
(Is there any thankyou or credit button?)

Re: Help with default pitch
G'day martinko, and welcome aboard!
As a Linux user myself (Mint 15), this got my attention.. I've done a little more digging, and it seems this has been an ongoing problem with Ubuntu for over 5 years now.. and it's not just mice being detected as joysticks.. apparently, Ubuntu often confuses a game controller for a mouse..
In light of which, I'm curious which version of Ubuntu you're using, as I'd have thought this bug would have been squashed, by now.
For some further reference and alternative solutions, this thread seems to have some good advice.. particularly for those for whom the solution found by another_commander doesn't work, as sometimes seems to be the case.

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Code: Select all
sudo rm /dev/input/js0
What would happen if martinko indeed plugged a joystick and get js0 device?

"Any sufficiently advanced information is indistinguishable from noise." [Newman, Lachmann, Moore]
Re: Help with default pitch
To overcome similar problems I use a start-up script that removes js0, moves js1->js0, js2->js1 etc. It does the job as long as I don't forget my joystick plugged. In that case the stick gets removed.
Re: Help with default pitch
G'day, Diziet Sma.
I'm running 12.04.3, but not a fresh install, it's a dist-upgrade from some 10 version, probably 10.04, I don't remember exactly. That could be the way the old bug sneaked in. HW is an old hp 2710 convertible. Mouse is not USB, hangs on BT.
As I do not use joystick, I don't care to rm it every time I have chance to play. Eventually I'll try Oolite on xubuntu 13.10 on my other laptop, might be last drop to force myself to fresh install. If not, I'll probably go deeper the launchpad link, thx for the tip.

That seems likely.. the bug does date from that that era..martinko wrote:it's a dist-upgrade from some 10 version, probably 10.04, I don't remember exactly. That could be the way the old bug sneaked in.

... aaaaaand the winner is: ROTATION SENSOR!!!
Recently I played in the train, forgetting to delete js0, noticing no problems, only when the piece of rail track was extra rough, and then I thought it's just me not making it on controls. After changing for another train with no tables, I ran into problems in the middle of the battle.
Not wanting to quit the game I desperately tried to keep the thing quiet - and found out that I can really do that!
Not rising into some Matrix glory cloud, after cleaning the skies I did some tilting and voila - no bug, just the GRAVITY SENSOR. I could even steer with it.
I'm playing on an old hp 2710p convertible, knew such something is onboard, but never noticed it's activity till now. For cooling reasons, I have the chasis allways supported on the oposite end, thus making an angle and a constant "pitch" value coming from correctly detected, just a bit wrongly attributed, "js0".
Anyway, thx for help and many targoid scalps to you all

Re: Help with default pitch
The gravity sensor functioning as a controller?

I swear.. every time you think you've seen it all..
At least you solved the mystery.. perhaps Spara can lend you his startup script, save you from deleting js0 manually all the time..
Fight on, Commander!
