To say nothing of one helluva lot of improvements and bugfixes to the core game..

How long has it been since you played Oolite, EAGLE 5?
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I just checked his posts, the previous post was back in 2006. I think that was when Giles' last version 1.65-stable was released. There has been a lot of improvements since then. Where to start?

There isn't exactly a latest trunk available anymore (unless built from source - which unfortunately is beyond my ken).
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Thanks for the welcome back!

Yeah it's been a while since I played it. I had picked up a version or two a couple of years ago but never got off the ground playing it too much.

I think I'll start with the latest and try it out on its own before adding some OXPs just to get the feel for it and the changes.

When I first got into Oolite the Windows version wasn't very stable and making anything for it was a bit of a challenge in regards to compatibility. It's really nice to see that's history now from what I can tell so far it runs GREAT!

You can always read up on the enhancements since 1.65 by checking the Announcements area, and reading the release notes for each version.

Hi. I was addicted to Elite on my spectrum and I've had a few periods of being addicted to Oolite since I was browsing games available for Ubuntu after building a computer in '0... - I dunno, a fair few years ago anyhow.

Firstly, thanks for an amazing game - loving the OXPs and the detailing but mostly the fact that its still the same game but better!

Secondly I've got a problem. I'm trying to assassinate some guy somewhere and some piece of equipment I've added (think it might be a sensor thing, probably wrong) has led to my messages rather than being in nice big text in the middle of the screen (towards the bottom) are in small text on the RHS. The messages are generally ignorable I know, but I think the mission might be giving me clues that I'm missing.

Now for a fully immersive experience I'm playing via a relatively low res projector onto my living room wall, plus, I'm getting older - basically through a combination of the tech and me I can't read those teensy messages off to the right and I'd like them big and centre again.

I did do a search and read the FAQs etc, and I even think I sorted the same problem a couple of years ago but I've forgotten what i did.

Ideally, I'd like a solution that didn't involve getting rid of anything I've equipped my Cobra Mk III with (flown various ships, keep coming back to old faithful) but just meant a bit of cutting and pasting into the offending file. My techie skills will allow me that much.

Less-than-ideally-but-still-ace: What's the culprit? Do I really need that targetting memory doofer?

Thanks, Liam.

Hi Blaze, and welcome.
I'm guessing that you are using a replacement HUD if your comms and console messages have moved and got smaller. If so this can be changed quite easily - you will need to open Hud.plist (which is in the Config folder of the OXP) and edit the font size. Look for the sections for message_gui and comm_log_gui, then adjust the row_height figure to something bigger - a bit of trial and error should give you the improvement you want.
Three important points.
1) Take a copy of the plist before you edit so you still have the original in case you need it.
2) Any good text editor will do but DO NOT use Notepad, as it breaks things.
3) You will need to flush the cache to make changes work. To do this, hold down the Shift key when you start the game until you see the spinning Cobra.
Hope this works! :)

Hello, another newbie here (although been playing Oolite for a few weeks now, up to Dangerous!)

Got a few goes on the BBC original, but had to wait for the Speccy version to play properly, then a bit later went on to an Amiga.

Now this is the best version! :)
