First of all, I'm sorry if my English is not clear.
I've never bougth an EP (escape pod). But it's possible to cheat using an EP when the "Maintenance Overhaul" event occurs. It coasts 3000 to fix the ship (it depends of the total value of the ship). If you want to save money, you can sell all of your cargo, buy an EP (1000), leave the space station and press ESC. So you will have a brand new ship paying 1000 instead of 3000.
As I said, I don't buy EP. I think the insurance should pay only a basic new ship, and should not cover all of the devices the old ship had.

Yes, the new ship has the same value and the same devices (military shields, docking computers, etc.). This is the point. If you don't want to pay 3000 for the "maintenance overhaul", you can use the escape pod (1000) and save 2000.
In my case, 2000 is not too much, since I have 250,000 and I can easily pay the maintenance of the ship.
In my oppinion, after using an escape pod, you should receive the same basic ship, but without the extra devices. You should have to buy again all those extra, expensible things.
In resume, "the maintanance overhaul" does not make sense, because it can be ignored.
Another question that does not make sense to me: you can clear your situation (fugitive, offender) using the escape pod, because your legal status is related to the ID of your ship. So, when you receive a new ship, your status returns to "clean". But your ranking (number of kills) remains the same. This is a little contradictory.

No, you missed my point - the resale value is the same, this means that the replacement ship will require the same degree of maintenance as the one you just escaped from. You don't save even one tenth credit, you lose the 1000 credits for the escape pod.
UPDATE: Yep, I just tested this out with one of my debugging saved games. My ship, a Python required 2300 Cr. of maintenance, but had an escape pod. I launched, hit escape, returned to the station, and my ship still required 2300 Cr. maintenance. Your suggested cheat doesn't work.
