Space Dust

Post by JazHaz »

This is kind of weird. In certain systems, I've not had any space dust at all. Then I jump to another system and its back.

Unfortunately there's nothing in my log.

This is using 1.76, and my new laptop in full shader mode, detailed planets on, Nvidia GT 635M card.

Maybe you could start a Kickstarter Campaign to found your £4500 pledge. 8)
Thanks to Gimi, I got an eBook in my inbox tonight (31st May 2014 - Release of Elite Reclamation)!

Had you been close to a sun before jumping? That usually causes it... something to do with the dust shader.
There is a fix - you have to disable the dust shader. It's a long-standing 'bug'.

I've got used to it, and actually quite like it now. I used to disable the dust shader, but not anymore.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Yeah that sounds about right. Visiting a lot of Kiota Solar Stations etc.

Yep - either sunskimming or visiting a near-sun station/hermit will do it.

When I first saw the title for this thread I though you were discussing how most of my games end. :P

I noticed this effect too, and assumed it was deliberate -- systems varying in how much debris they contain, and so forth.

Actually, a bit more planet-to-planet variety would be a good thing, IMO. Maybe this could be made into an enhancement for the future: 'clean' systems and 'dirty' ones, the latter with lots of boulders and space dust so thick that scooping up canisters that have been scattered far and wide becomes a real problem.

(Don't know why I'm suggesting this, to be honest -- I have enough trouble scooping as it is).

Hey JazHaz... have you run trunk lately? The disappearing spacedust appears to have... erm, disappeared! I've done multiple skims/jumps and the dust is always there! (Possibly/probably as a result of Jens fixing the rainbow spacedust? Running trunk r5493/5499). Could you please check?

I'll bump this gently - then go off-topic: if what I'm seeing in trunk (r5505) today is the 'new star textures' (am I correct?), then it is really cool!

It's these (or at least part of it), and yes, extremely cool sky-candy.

<nods at the TMA> I think I'll up my star_count_multiplier even more!

Credit must be given where credit is due, so yes, these are ZygoUgo's new star textures, which are now part of the core game, with kind permission from their creator. We have incorporated the star textures only, so if you also want the nebulae from ZY's OXP you will still have to download it. We also touched the probabilities of some of those textures with respect to what was in the original OXP, in order to tone down a bit the ones that have the too "shiny" look.

Hope you enjoy the new sky.

Very much so! My thanks to all concerned in bringing it about! 8)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Yes... kudos to ZygoUgo! I didn't want the nebulae, which is why I didn't install the OXP in the first place... but the sky is now much nicer!

Oops - perhaps 1000 was a trifle too high. I got a lot of stuttering in the BGS hyperspace effect, and my gfx card temperature hit an all-time high! Down to 200!
