New(ish) commander

Hello everyone,
I'm relatively new to the forums, they are really great for general oolite discussion... 'normal' people don't seem to be that interested. :shock:

I've been playing oolite for a month or two now, and just recently upgraded my cobra mk 1 for a mk 3. Being too young to have played the original, I'm discovering all sorts of new things on the journey, like how great it feels to get a new ship. :D

I'm now Dangerous (1426), in G2, and mainly a bounty hunter. I have only one question: does anyone else think that the chivalric combat is a bit too easy to get money from? I currently stop myself after winning around 20,000 cr., out of guilt.

Welcome aboard!

A fellow hunter, eh? Good to know! Depending on how ironassed your mk3 is, you might consider DeepSpace Pirates and ToughGuys 3 OXPs. I've found the combat generated by those to be quite the help with my hunting. More enemies equal more challenge and profit.

Other OXPs also help with that. RandomHits is a great one.

Some of the Random Hits missions can be quite challenging.

Are you talking about Feudal States OXP, HAL? I've never used it, myself.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Welcome. And I agree the combat challenges in Feudal states are fairly easy money. Random Hits though is very difficult once you get to the difficult hits. I even cancelled a hit this week because no matter what I couldn't kill it.

Have you tried the Thargoid Carrier OXP yet?
Oolite is Ooheavy... Cpt says "Write on Commander"

Rese249er: I'll have a go with those two, but as for random hits, I'm onto the 4000cr bounties at the moment. My next client is a commander judebert, who has had to wait a while due to feudal states, which bought me the mk3.

Shipbuilder: that visit was the highlight of my Ooweek, just had to take a screenshot.

El Viejo: yep, feudal states. I find it's a bit too easy to bet 10,000cr on a 10:1 fight, and win. I mean, if my ship was really in danger, now that would me more interesting...

pagroove: oh, the only time I gave up a hit, I crashed in shame straight away, and persisted! Took ages, but I kept my dignity!

cpt: no, I haven't, but I do have thargoid wars. I'll have a look. Ooh, and just a thought, how about an OXP ship version of Rama?

Try installing [wiki]NPC-shields_OXP[/wiki], HAL (if you haven't already, of course) - that makes life a little tougher, and [wiki]Escort_Formations[/wiki] adds to the 'interest'.
Also, [wiki]Fair_Cobra_III[/wiki] is a nice little OXP - again, it adds to the 'interest'.

I always assumed NPC's already had shields... Suppose that's a must now, I've been living a lie :shock: I'll definitely try those fairer play OXP's, El Viejo, but maybe after commander judebert has payed a visit to lord giles :twisted:

If you like a 'tough' NPC ship in your game, try the [wiki]Green_Gecko[/wiki] - it only appears rarely, but it will occasionly test your skills to the limit.

Your eyes will thank you, and it's customizable too for both ambience and game mechanics. :wink:
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.
