Starting Oolite from scratch... OXP recommendations?
Because of a few bugs in Oolite on Linux, I am begrudgingly moving my gaming from Ubuntu to Windows. So, I thought I might as well start clean, with the exception of my kill count.
So, if I'm starting clean, I thought I'd ask if anyone recommends any OXPs. Anybody want me to try out their OXPs, or any good new ones I've missed?
Here's my current OXP list:
Anguis Primus 2.0
Koneko Industries 2.0
Griff's shipset
System Redux
Green Gecko

Random Ship Names is a good recent one you might have missed, as is Escort Formations.

Explorer's Club is a good one, it's ideal too for when you're starting out with a new pilot as you won't have to do too much backtracking to re-vist systems you went to before you added in the oxp

Crazy me, I forgot BGS. Well, now it's installed.
I think I'm going to pass on Escort Formations for now, it looks like it changes the game mechanics a little bit more than I'd like, but I'm curious, so I know I'm going to have to try it.
Random Ship Names is pretty cool, thanks for sharing that. I always thought it odd that only the player gets a custom ship name, now it's fixed.Disembodied wrote:Random Ship Names is a good recent one you might have missed, as is Escort Formations.

I think I remember testing that OXP out once before. I'm going to have to give it a go, thanks for pointing it out.Griff wrote:Explorer's Club is a good one, it's ideal too for when you're starting out with a new pilot as you won't have to do too much backtracking to re-vist systems you went to before you added in the oxp

Nice OXPs... they solve a few problems with game immersion I've had for a while, much like the ship names.Gimbal Locke wrote:
Speaking of ship names, I'm working on getting one for my brand new Cobra MkIII. So far, I'm calling her the Defiant, named after the monster they called a starship in DS9. I'd upload a screenshot, but I haven't bothered to find the screenshots folder in Windows yet, lazy me...

<offtopic>Not really a monster. Yes it has tough weapons, but is little more than a scout ship in size. See here.</offtopic>RyanHoots wrote:I'm calling her the Defiant, named after the monster they called a starship in DS9.

<offtopic>Guess I should have been more specific, I meant "Monster" as in weapons, not size. After all, Dukat called it the most heavily armed warship in the quadrant, which is a pretty impressive statement. I wonder if he was exaggerating just a little bit...</offtopic>JazHaz wrote:<offtopic>Not really a monster. Yes it has tough weapons, but is little more than a scout ship in size. Just out of interest Ryan, what bugs? I've always run Oolite on Linux and it's as stable and reliable as it's ever been here.

Apart from the ones already posted I'd recommend the following:
BGS: Adds backgrounds to stations and music/sound effects - really adds to the immersion.
Sensible Sun: Places the sun farther away from the planets.
Snoopers: It's basically a news system and adds to the immersion.
BlOomberg Markets: Requires Snoopers. Adds random events that affect the commodity prices.

Re: Starting Oolite from scratch... OXP recommendations?
Thanks for all the great OXPs everyone, I'm surprised how much I've missed when looking about on the Wiki.
I recently got a new computer, and Oolite on Linux can't identify the graphics card correctly. I get infrequent CTDs at random moments, and Oolite will crash if I enable shaders, or resize the game's window. I recently gave up trying to fix it, and Dragonfire suggested that I try it on Windows. So, I'm doing that. So far, it's quite nice, although I do feel a little bad about depending on Windows so much. But hey, I'm addicted to Oolite, so I'd rather depend on Windows than have to live without the best space game ever.Smivs wrote:Just out of interest Ryan, what bugs? Well, I've just added a new gfx card to my old rig, and although it took a bit of sorting out (as Linuxy things sometimes do) it's working extremely well...both the computer and the game.RyanHoots wrote:I recently got a new computer, and Oolite on Linux can't identify the graphics card correctly. Why not post on the Linux forum with full details of the new computer and the problems. It's quite likely someone can help you sort these issues out.

Re: Starting Oolite from scratch... OXP recommendations?
I have a few more suggestions:
New Cargoes OXP: Adds over 100 new specialist trade goods, contracts, auctions etc. Much more interesting than the standard trading (imo).
Illegal Goods Tweak OXP: Changes the way contraband is handled in the game to a more realistic way. Also supports New Cargoes OXP.
Escort Contracts OXP: Does what the name implies - it adds escort contracts in which you escort other ships from one system to another. It's fun and a nice diversion from trading.
