I too, have also pondered this! From the sound of it though, a complete rebuild of the game would be a lot of work. Perhaps one day there'll be an option for both!

A complete rebuild of the game to make it 'multi-player' will result in a game where you never see another player anyway. For it to be multi-player, it needs to cease to be Oolite.CommRLock78 wrote:a complete rebuild of the game would be a lot of work. Perhaps one day there'll be an option for both!
For example, you and a friend play side-by-side on two PCs in the same room on the same LAN. How would it work? Not technically, but in terms of gameplay. Bearing in mind:
- time travels differently between the player in witchspace and the player flying or docked;
- you will not 'see' each other unless within 30 km of one another, in the same system, in the same galaxy. At the same time.
- what happens when one player dies?
How would you resolve those three issues to make it 'multi-player'?

Personally it's 'stick the kettle on', or crack open a beer if i had one.
Wow what a ride; just finished this thread ( i have dipped my toe in before but not all the way ). This should be compulsory reading; maybe just chop it off at the last post and turn the whole thread into a mega readme file with the download.
it makes you appreciate what you have when you seriously consider not having it. Right? hey i know what i meant!

let's face it "Space is big, really really big... " as the friendly lettered book says. So true multiplayer in any space setting is a bit naff, even STO has to fudge this by limiting the multiplayer side of things to agreed upon shared missions and subspace 'chatter'. Probably the best we could shoot for and keep the oolite feel is three features, all possible doable in OXPs
1. IRC based "hyper chat'
2. Shared Exchange rates (to where 2 players visiting the same system at the same or close enough time will see the same numbers)
3. OPNPC(other player NPCs) : where in a very rare event you can see someone else s ship in system, possible with a 'trained' AI to 'fly' like them.

3. Personalities OXP already does this, although it is still technically a Work-in-Progress.

Basically all I have to do is kick myself in the butt to return to it and apply the finishing touches. The only thing that was really left to do when I put it on the shelf was to re-write the handling of the cloak. Also, there are perhaps some commands which still have to be made 1.76-compliant.Smivs wrote:Commander McLane, the author, is often around the board so perhaps he could let us know the current situation.Dr.Tripsa wrote:ok that is made of awesome, pity it's currently shown as broken thoughSmivs wrote:

Re: Oolite Multiplayer? Please read
After reading all 10 pages, very interesting by the way.
I agree with Cmdr James, a fully active internet based oolite would be impossible to play as oolite.
Though I think it was Cmdr DH that mentioned a LAN system could possibly work.
It was on one of the early pages.
The way I see it there would have to be a dedicated machine to hold the ooniverse and set addons.
The in game time would have to be cancled, so that all players hooked up would be on the same time all the time.
Makes the idea of Oolite clubs forming in places with quite a few players a short distance from each other starting.
Anywhere in the UK is a short distance. Here in Perth WA distance is measured in travel time, mostly days.
Also would make a great reason to go on holiday.
"Yes love we are going there on holiday" on the whisper " So I can try smoking a few Iron assed Cmdrs"
Just a thought.
I played the original Elite to Elite status, Then Oolite since V1.65. never disapointed or board with single player.
All they oxps.. How could anyone want more.
Though to sit in the same room with other Cmdrs and watch their face as you tan their Iron so called Hide.
Or feel the dread knowing that aint some daft AI cooking your tail fins.

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Re: Oolite Multiplayer? Please read
i think the only way to make it multi-player would be to recreate it as an mmo... mmoolite? just trying to sync between players would be seriously difficult unless it is all running on the same server... maybe one server per galaxy.
