To go with the first post approval hack, this hack might also be of interest. It's a captcha variant, but uses a selection of photographs where the new user has to select them under a criteria before they can register.
With a suitable population of images (elite/oolite ships vs real spaceships or TV ones for example) it could I think be quite a good defense, against both bots and even perhaps some less knowledgable sweatshop captcha-crackers.
