"a" vs "a n"

Post by Odo987 »

In Galaxy 3:
"The planet Bixein is a n unremarkable dump."

This file needs to be edited:
Contents/Resources/Config/descriptions.plist

Line 247 changed from:
<string>a [15] [16]</string>
to:
<string>a[15] [16]</string>

This has been tested and does not break the other cases.

However, there's another bug that can't be solved quite as easily. In Galaxy 1:
"The world Ara is scourged by a evil disease."
This will require array [26] to be duplicated since it is used both with and without an article.
Attacking a Navigational Beacon is illegal. Police are on their way.

Fixored. (removed the use of the article in 'a [26]...' with simply '[26]...')
"The planet Rear is scourged by well-intentioned OXZs."

If it's between consenting adults, it's none of my business. But at least buy them dinner first... ;)

When I first saw the text "xxx is a n unremarkable dump." in the Galaxies Spreadsheet, I was tickled as it reproduces what I remembered as a 'bug' in the Spectrum Elite.

But I see Oolite does not do the same, it says (for example) "The planet Edorte is an unremarkable dump."

And it is not just the Galaxies Spreadsheet that has this text. As spotted by Albee, the Wiki planet list does the same thing.

Has Oolite been 'fixed' to remove this grammatical error? Or is it a false memory - did this error exist in Elite or not? And what should Oolite do?

Edit: Answering my own second question - apparently it was a false memory  :

But you must admit, it was on topic. And it does highlight a problem with lots of Wiki pages and the Galaxy Spreadsheet - although I see it has changed immensely since I downloaded it and no longer shows this " a n " behaviour.

 My previous record was 5 years 5 months. But I was told up front that this forum prefers people to post in existing threads, so I am being a well-behaved - if resurrectionist - Commander. :)
