An eye candy idea if someone wants to run with it...an actual shipyard, complete with various models out the front for your perusal.
All you'd need is some generic dockable station, with a dozen or so inactive ships floating out the front (just as eye candy, probably also want to ensure a pilot's kill count doesn't go up if they decide to E-bomb or Q-mine the shipyard). You'd also want some nifty defences to 'encourage' proper behaviour.
(Oh and if you're really finicky, on docking you'd get access to some overpriced, slowly performed maintenance in the best traditions of your typical old-earth car yard after sales service, as well as the opportunity to buy ships of course).
Wouldn't it be great to be able to haggle...? Hey you could string 3 or 4 of these together and have an 'auto alley'.
The shipyard would also need to sell various items of dubious use, such as the beer cooler, perhaps an auto dispensing cockpit deodorant, the infamous jellybaby dispenser, trumble repellant etc

Re: Honest Joe's Shipyard
Ha, nice idea.
On a similar note, I sometimes think that when I learn how to model <waits for laughter to die down> I'd like to do a construction yard, where the ships are actually built. Maybe some huge gantrys/frames, with part-built ships in them. Imagine an Anaconda, with the aft mostly completed, but the front half just a spaceframe/skeleton with decks etc under construction within the framework, that sort of thing. Quite a modelling challenge I expect.

That link is missing a final full stop... this works.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Just for that, I'm not posting any images, Smivs. (I didn't actually include a linked-link, just the URL, phpBB auto-linkified it (without the last dot).)Smivs wrote:Sorry, Wildeblood, but that's got to be the most useless link ever.Wildeblood wrote:
The SIRF is a huge station model, and if you fly around the back you can see the shipyard with gantries dividing it up and ships parked inside. There are also rusty old bombs parked outside in the rain, ones not valuable enough to be parked under cover.
