Idiots Guide Required To Change To BBC Controls Please

Hi everyone! Complete Oolite noobie here, and technophobe. I played Elite on my Acorn Electron as a teenager and got to Deadly, but these days am not a games player at all. However I felt nostalgic the other day and via some surfing discovered Oolite. I couldn't believe I could download it for free and am already hooked! Respect to all involved...

So here is my question (I have searched the board for an answer but have only found answers way above my technical grasp)

I hate the controls as they are and would like a step by step idiots guide to changing the controls to the BBC style. Please assume I am an idiot!

I have gone to this page

but have no idea what to do from there. I am using a laptop running Windows Vista. If you need me to tell you what version of Oolite I am using then please tell me how to find that info!

Seriously, I'm an idiot. Please take me step by step! How do I find the keyconfig.plist? I can't stress enough that I don't know where to start, which is why the other threads addressing similar questions lost me. You lost me on the first sentence...

WARNING: NOTEPAD IS EVIL!!! It'll add file-corrupting metadata, so you'll need to use another editor, such as jEdit or Notepad ++.

Ok if you have not change default install path, Double click computer, select c: and double click again. There must be a folder called oolite yes?

Hi Muck,
You'll need to find your keyconfig.plist as Okti suggested. I'm afraid I have no idea where that will be in Vista, but a search for 'resources' might turn it up.
Once you've found it you will see a list like the one you found on BerliOS.
Now, it's best not to mess around with the 'main' keyconfig file (I hope) you found, so copy it and put it in your AddOns folder (where you put OXPs - again I don't know where this is under Vista). It is this copy you can edit.
The letters in double quotes are the keys used.
Let's look at the speed. It will currently look like this

	key_increase_speed          = " ";
	key_decrease_speed          = "/";
	key_inject_fuel             = "i";

where 'spacebar' is increase speed and '/' is decrease speed. If you wanted to reverse this, so 'spacebar' decreases speed, you'd need to edit it thus.

One last word of advice. When editing anything Oolite, DON'T use notepad. Notepad adds unwanted characters and breaks things badly, so use Notepad++ or any other good text editor.

Welcome aboard Muck... as has been said, avoid using Notepad to edit the keyconfig.plist. However, Wordpad will be fine.

Ok, I have found the keyconfig.plist in the resources folder and am downloading notepad++ to be able to open it (right?)

Since Commander Muck says he really knows nothing about computers, even this edit might be too hard for him.
It would be probably easier if anyone who remembers the BBC-style layout could post the entire modified .plist here so he can just C&P, or even put it in the box.net for download.

I may not be as stupid as I thought once I get going....

I have the keyconfig.plist open with notepad++

Now is it simply a case of changing the keys I want changed as Smivs said?

Do I simply "save as" after I'm done?
