How do I buy a ship?

Post by wargaZmer »

Hi there, I started the game with the cobra mk3 and I want to buy a better ship, but I can't find the way to buy one. Is there some special planet I have to go to, is there a keyboard combination to press to reach the ship market? Also, if I force a pirate jump his ship, is it a way for me to capture it? I know they are noob questions, but take a little of your precious time to answer, please...

Hi wargaZmer, and welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat.
Go to the F3 screen (equipment) and press F3 again. That will take you to the shipyard. You'll get a better selection the better the planet is....high-tech industrials will always have a good range.
Happy hunting.

As it says here (and indeed, in the instructions you'll find in the game folder once you've installed): http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Pilot% ... nce_Manual (just for future reference)

Press F3 twice when docked.

The shipyard is generated randomly - cost of ships varies depending on equipment fitted and tech' level of system.

Hope this helps?

Oh, and "Welcome to the Friendliest Board this side of Riedquat" (tm)

Don't worry about Noobie questions - we were all there once.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the Pumpkin! :)

If you have Fuel Scoops installed you can pick up not only fuel from suns, but cargo pods and escape capsules. Once you have a pirate scooped, you may get an extra reward when you dock.

See the link above for more information.

Welcome!

To salvage the ships themselves, you must install the Deep Space Dredger OXP - but be aware that salvaging small ships won't even pay for the drone.
You know those who, having been mugged and stabbed, fired, dog run over, house burned down, wife eloped with best friend, daughters becoming prostitutes and their countries invaded - still say that "all is well"?
I'm obviously not one of them.

I'm pressing twice f3, and nothing seems to happen, I'm still at the ship outfitting window... Must I do anything else? Does that mean there are no ships for sale on that planet? Must I install an expansion kit?

Yes some planets don't have shipyards. And no you don't need to install anything else.

Make sure that you don't have 'strict mode' enabled... and welcome aboard!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Yes, strict mode is for those who want to play the original Elite game, which never allowed ships to be bought. Note that OXPs aren't compatible with this mode.

Nice catch EV - oh, how easy is it to forget these little (obvious) traps!

(Might make a nice little addition to the Wiki (that it's not accessible in strict mode)

Also, renaming the option from 'strict mode' to maybe 'original Elite gameplay' might prevent young Jamesons from experimenting with it by mistake.

Good idea. Until I learned otherwise, I thought "strict mode" was some sort of iron-man "when you die, you're dead, no reloads" option as per Escape Velocity. Maybe we could have a confirmation screen, so that when someone chooses "strict mode" they get asked something like
Strict Mode disables all non-original gameplay options. This means:
  • No changing ship: you fly a Cobra III only
  • No OXPs (Oolite eXpansion Packs)
  • No rich fun-filled new goodness
ARE YOU SURE? Y/N
