nice work. itching to have a go myself but i think my ships might not lend themselves to paper. well, the MkI and MkII perhaps, not sure about the others.

heh, we should talk Griff into doing one for his uber-detailed Cobra, that'd keep him quiet for a while :-D

I did take a look at Griff's Krait and Boa models and wondered what it would be like to convert them to paper - then I decided that I didn't have four years of free time and that the model would have to be six feet long to make sure that the little detail bits would be easy to make out of paper without having to use a magnifying glass and tweezers!

One little idea I was playing with in my head (if people like the paper models) was making addon bits that could be stuck on to the finished models. Thinks like little radar dishes, missiles, Q-bomb housings, patch plates, landing gear, escape pod outlines, engine pods and so on. The Adder is just begging for the "wingfolding" system to be added to it.

I was also thinking that making alternate textures for the paper models would be a breeze once the basic models are complete. :-)

Glad you're liking them. (Fer-de-lance is about 50% done, btw - busy weekend).

you could load blank templates and have a Pimp My Paper Cobra competition, get people to draw their own skin and make the ship.

Nice idea. I'm using Inkscape to make the nets, so I would be happy to share the SVG files once I get all the ships done. :-)

Fer-de-lance is now complete. Work has started on the Gecko. Shark teeth. <shudder>

Yay, DOUBLE POST.

Gecko model is now complete. The design on this one was a bugger to get right.

Krait paper model is now finished. This one has more instructions because the "spikes" on the wingtips need a little more work than the other models.

I'd just like to throw in my two small units of monetary value:

This is awesome.

Glad you like it!

The power of positive feedback has resulted in two more complete models this morning.

Mamba and Moray are complete and ready to download. I did the medical version of the Moray because I think it looks cooler. :-)

Another busy day. NCIS season 6 and vector drawing. Best. Sunday. Ever. ;-)

Shuttle, Sidewinder, Thargon and Thargoid are finished and uploaded. I'm quite proud of the Thargoid. It's the most complex texture in the ship set, and I think I've finally managed to do it justice! I just hope the model goes together!!

For some reason the text on the PDF has come out semi-transparent and I can't work out why.

Enjoy.

Just so you know, I haven't stopped working on this. I initially skipped the escape pod because the original set of ship meshes that Giles gave the community did not include the "Redux" pod. I converted the model from Oolite over to OBJ in Wings and simplified it (taking away the bevelled edges and the engine recesses) and started working on paper model-ifying it on Monday.

It's been the hardest model yet, even though the actual shape is simple! Oddly, now that it's done, the SVG file is 10MB in size and the PDF only squishes down to 6MB (which my Elite site uploader can't handle).

I'm currently trying to reduce the complexity and find out what's bloating the files. I've exported out the blank nets of the remaining ships and it hopefully shouldn't take long to get them drawn up once the pod is done.

How many posts am I on now?

The size issues are sorted and the Escape Pod and a special variant of it are now online.

I had planned to put them up as one sheet, but the size was too big. The "special" one uses some embedded bitmaps and bloated the size. You'll see why if you open the pdf and have a look.

This would be a lovely desktop model, actually.

It's made me think that I could make a pretty nice "useful" Oolite card model. The cargo container could be made as a closable box that could be used to keep stuff in. I'll work on that once I finish the ships. Now that the pod's out of the way things should be a bit faster.

I spent some time on Monday night extracting some models from a couple of the old OXPs. I have nets for the Salamander, the Python Class Cruiser and Murgh's Wolf Mk II (which I've always had a soft spot for). Maybe once the main set is complete (and a scaled set is done) I'll do some of those too.

Yeah - I'm quite enjoying this at the moment.

Really, great job Selezen. I'm thinking these might make good christmas tree ornaments. :)
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.
