Help: Broken First mission?

Shortly after reaching Competent, I got a message saying someone had stolen a military Constrictor and I should shoot it down by going to somewhere like XiDees. I did this only to get another message to jump to another system. This went on for a few goes until finally I got a message saying the ship had fitted a Galatic Hyperdrive and used it. So before galatic jumping to galaxy 2 I decided to build my ship up a bit more but when I finally galaxtic jumped, there was no sign of the ship on the way to the station nor was there any clue where it went once I got there. I'm at a loss. Is this broken or are you supposed to just check a few nearby systems and hope for the best?

Yep. Exactly this - check the surrounding systems. At least if no OXP has changed the hyperjump behaviour... .-)
