Oolite OXP Catalog

Post by Dragonfire »

I'm working on building a .pdf catalog of all the OXPs. I'm using the wiki for the material, but I want to extend an opportunity for everyone to contribute longer (1 to 3 paragraph max) sales summaries and/or screenshots/photos.

I have three listing styles:
>Full page (1-3 paragraphs, picture optional)
>Photo listing (sentence, picture)
>Simple listing (one sentence)

I will be posting equipment, weapons, HUDs, and ships at this point. Any "bundles" (such as Armoury OXP) will be broken down, and the OXP name given at the end of each item.

Umm,

the rate of OXP release and upgrade is pretty high.

You up for keeping this thing updated every couple of weeks?

Surely that's what the wiki is for.

The catalog is restricted to equipment, weapons, and HUDs. (I'm actually dropping ships for the time being). This is more or less because the wiki can be rather daunting, and a little catalog would provide a quick-glance type thing that the wiki doesn't. Not to mention, the way I'm doing it doesn't require me to post about OXP updates, just new OXPs.

If it isn't useful or whatnot, I'll drop it after the first time. Anyway, it isn't like it takes much work.

I'd agree that the sheer amount of OXP's can be daunting but the OXP list coupled with the summary pages, and the OXP's own wiki page does the job imho. Don't let that stop you though if you really think it would be useful.

I think it is worth a shot, to be honest. And again, if it turns out not to be worth it, I just won't do it again. :3

Sounds like a good idea, I don't often visit the oxp lists, generally only when I hear about something new in the BB.
I for one would download a catalogue of the new stuff.
Maybe once a month or even quarterly would be ok. Even once a year would be ok.
I think any more often than monthly would make it a flyer instead of a catalogue.

Suggestion: don't bother. It will be out of date within hours of issue, so people will continue to use the Wiki. Also, most people do not install all the OXPs possible, only the ones they want, so as a reference it is not right.

You are giving yourself a lot of work that would be better spent playing!

Unless you intend to produce it as 'fluff' to go with the fiction section. Such as a sample catalogue at a particular space station as at a certain date.

Dragonfire, you're reading my mind. I was just suggesting something along these lines to be incorporated into YAH - a sort of in-game advertising of the available OXPs.

The one-liners you were suggesting could be ideal for such a purpose.

First release in the OXP Catalog - Equipment and Weapons. This is more or less a test. If this goes over well, I'll do ships. Then from there, activities and missions, etc. It didn't take much time on my part, and I kinda had fun.

Yes, I used pictures and screenshots I picked up from the wiki and elsewhere. I'm not claiming copyright on anything, not even the project. Still, if you REEEEEEALY don't want your screenshot or whatnot in there, lemme know.

Looking nice. I still don't understand the added value of a catalogue over the [wiki]OXP List[/wiki] sorted by category, which gives you all equipment- and weapons-OXPs including download links. But to each their own, and it looks nice. :)

I'd strongly advise you to state a license in the document. At least by a quick parsing through it I found none. It's really simple: everything in the Wiki is covered by the Wiki's license. You may use and re-publish it under the conditions of this license. These conditions may include that you have to re-publish under the same license, therefore you wouldn't be allowed to re-publish without explicitly stating a license.

Unfortunately I can't find a page on the Elite Wiki where its license is stated. If MediaWiki's license applies, it's GNU General Public License V3. Can someone more knowledgeable provide more insight and perhaps a link?

Looks good! 'Tis a useful offline resource/shopping list for those who are deciding what oxps they may want, and it has the advantage that all the information is in one place, rather than having to open multiple pages to read the description. So in that respect, it may be quicker for a newbie to decide what they want.

I'm fine with keeping track of things on the board here myself, and have enough experience that the oxp list doesn't daunt me (indeed, I have most of the things I want!), but I can see this being useful for a Jameson.

It's useful for OXPers as well, I'd think.

@Dragonfire: Could you add a index?
