Retro Rockets OXP

Post by Thargoid »

The Ships Systems Department of the Aquarian Shipbuilding Corporation would like to present to you their latest products, retro rockets. These are a redirection of the ships jets to provide reverse thrust when triggered (with the "n" key, after selection with shift-n). The rockets requre 1ly of witchspace fuel per use, and must be allowed to cool down for at least 30s between uses. Automatic system interlocks are include to ensure this.

Galcop have also stipulated that retro rockets are not usable within the aegis of any of their stations, so an interlock will trigger if such an attempt is made. The interlocks will also trigger if the ship is under either fuel injection or the torus drive, as the use of retro rockets under such conditions could cause serious hull damage.

The system can be purchased and fitted at any good tech level 9 or higher station, for a cost of 500 credits.

Nice one Thargoid, will have to give this a test. :D
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Ah! That's where I remember them from - the XT version of Elite.

They've been mentioned a few times when people have been talking about other versions of Elite. So as I had a few minutes to kill whilst waiting for my dinner to cook, I thought I'd knock them up. As you can see it's not the largest nor most complex of OXPs, but I think they work quite well.

I'm lacking motivation for any big OXPs at the moment, but I've got a few little things on the to-do list that I might just get out of the way. This was the first of those.

They get a mention in Incursio too.

This is how I finally managed to deliver the Thargoid plans in the Amiga version of Elite - Every time I was running hot and being swamped by Thargoids I'd flip over and hit the retro rockets - giving me time to cool the lasers and recharge the shields...

Drew will be pleased - Incursio - art imitating (Oo)life.

would you be up for writing some scripty stuff for me, by any chance? populatey type stuff, probably fairly simple (for you, lol). no worries if you're wanting to get the other stuff out the way.

Any particular reason they can't be used in the station aegis?

probably in cas eyou hit them by accident on launch and rocket yourself back into the dock! or, activate them accidentally on approach and wipe out the buoy.

Fair enough, I just thought that they might be useful to avoid accidents when docking; but if you are following proper docking procedure and request a docking window then you probably won't need them.

Thargoid, I tested these and they work great! I can dogfight with these by using the injectors just after I retro behind the ship that was following me. Thanks! Sometimes the simplest code gives the most effective results. :D

Is it just me but for some reason I seem to in a straight line. I can turn the ship but I can't maneuver. And is there a way to turn them off once activated? I was in a dog fight with an other chopped Cobra and I thought I was going to shoot the railgun "FIRE" I shouted, then  I was going backwards. Try to turn it off :?

But I like the idea. :D

Docking is the last place you want to use them - you're sat nicely between the station and the nav buoy. No matter if you're heading in or coming out - you hit the rockets and you're going splat into one or the other. Hence to prevent pilots hitting the wrong control, closely followed by something large and solid, Galcop banned their usage within the Aegis.

The space around the station is basically too crowded.
