Hey! I resemble that remark.

<evil grin> Hmm... that could be fixed.

I'm pretty sure this is a definite bot – 20+ brand-new memberships (yesterday and today) all over the place: Australian Low Carb Forum, Hip-Hop Universe, TheGoalPosts, Club Peugeot, etc. ...

I have a phpBB forum on a site of mine and, after trying captchas and all sorts, I have found a way of catching the spammers that works for me.

I have defined a "custom profile field" (Admin Control Panel, Users and Groups, Custom profile fields) called "Spammer", field type Boolean, defaulting to Yes with a description "Nasty spammer. If left set to 'Yes', your account and your postings will be deleted in the near future."

Every so often I run a bit of SQL that deletes every post of an account where "Spammer = TRUE" and then deletes those accounts.

 That's one hell of a sales pitch!
Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.
