Re: Show and Tell (new ships/ ships in progress)
the Star Jelly...
The Star-jelly is a strange, translucent space-dwelling organism, often found in or near asteroid fields, where they may remain for some time trapped in the weak gravitational fields if the asteroids. Star-jellys have limited movement, and are normally content to float free in space being wafted around by the solar wind.
They are believed to 'feed' by absorbing the small traces of Quirium found in interplanetary space. Because of their high Quirium content, destroying them is not recommended.
They are seldom found in interstellar space. They are not thought to be intelligent, and although their biology is un-clear they are thought to be more like plants than animals.

Re: Show and Tell (new ships/ ships in progress)
There are already at least 2 OXPs with "eagles" as ship names (ADCK's and the ones from Space 1999).
A third may get a little (more) confusing...

The problem I have is that my concept looks very much like the actual bird, I have considered changing the name to "Raven"
but if there are better bird names please let me know

Re: Show and Tell (new ships/ ships in progress)
If it has actual wings then name it the hawk from arc elite and use the (butterflies?/animation?) demos to make a subent script for the wings to change position and color while in flight, such as cruising and attack posture positions and docking or maybe get elaborate and make the specific evasive movements of the craft move the wings in a certain way. The idea has real potential but I don't have the skills yet to make the ship and subents for it. Would be a direct evolution for the those demos and show others the way. Either way I would save the hawk name for something like that.
Have you tried the name vulture, osprey, penguin, kiwi, dodo, peregrine, foxbat, bugie, chupacabra(not sure of spelling), crow(and then in the display name you can have a group leader described as a "murder" of crows or "Crow Murder Leader"),etc.(I like the last one, it inspires some fear)

Take an idea from one person and twist or modify it in a different way as a return suggestion so another person can see a part of it that can apply to the oxp they are working on.

Re: Show and Tell (new ships/ ships in progress)
The butterflies demo is the one with the flapping wings - the animation demo just has oscillating spheres. That said I have on my HD a version of butterflies which uses the frame callbacks and it looks a lot better than the released one. But as there are still some glitches with the frame callback mechanism I haven't fully released it (relating to what happens when they are running on an entity which does a witchspace jump). But if it is of use to people, they can certainly have a copy of it on request.CommonSenseOTB wrote:If it has actual wings then name it the hawk from arc elite and use the (butterflies?/animation?) demos to make a subent script for the wings to change position and color while in flight, such as cruising and attack posture positions and docking or maybe get elaborate and make the specific evasive movements of the craft move the wings in a certain way. Re: Show and Tell (new ships/ ships in progress)
HEHE! (I spelled it right! )
Yeah I know what it is I just threw that in there because its stalking and killing mannerisms fit a pirate type ship and Staer9's ships have a dark overall feel to them and it just seemed to match.
If it's a lone predator chupacabra fits and if it's a group or swarming predator the murder of crows approaching will make your hair stand up.

Re: Show and Tell (new ships/ ships in progress)
It's not so much a question of a better name, but the fact that quite a lot of names (usually the simpler ones, like "Eagle") are already taken for other ships.Staer9 wrote:but if there are better bird names please let me know
Personally I would have thought that if a ship designer has come up with a preferred name, the very first thing he would do is to check whether it already exists on the various ship lists on the Wiki. I have to admit that I am a little amazed that to quite a lot of ship designers this idea doesn't seem to occur. I mean, scrolling through a list in order to check whether your preferred name is already on that list isn't exactly rocket science.
Checking the list, it seems BTW that there isn't a "Raven" yet. I would've sworn there is (one of Charlie's ships, I thought), but apparently I would've been wrong (or at least it isn't on the list).
