Griffs all in one new ship designs...

Post by -LOC- »

First of all, I want to say hello as this is my first post. I also wish to say that I have just found and absolutely LOVE Oolite! I played Elite back in the day and couldn't get enough of it.

Now that that's out of the way, I have a problem. I've been flying around blasting pirate out of the sky and trading from one planet to the next, and all was well and good. Then! Then I found out that this thing is expandable with .oxp files! Boy! I went right to the neatest ship models I could find! Griff's ship were absolutely what the game needed. It gave the ships as updated a feel as the planets and the stars (they look almost as if they're from Celestia but I'm not certain). So I grabbed the oxp and copied everything correctly and fired up the game only to be met with the same old cobra mark 3 that I had before (I need a few more credits, darnit). Any way, I started a quick new game and crashed the old cobra mark 3 right into the nav bouy.

I assumed these ships were a complete replacement for the in game ships but once I actually read the forum online about them, I found that they didn't actually replace anything but were "extra" in a sense. So this is fine, I understand why it was done this way, but my question is this: is there a way I can edit my save file to give me control of that ship or do I need to save up money to buy what I already have!?

Hi -LOC- and welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat,

If you open you save file with a text editing program (but not notepad) and search for cobra you should find these lines:

Code: Select all

    <key>ship_desc</key>
    <string>cobra3-player</string>
    <key>ship_kills</key>
    <integer>ship kill number here</integer>
    <key>ship_name</key>
    <string>Cobra Mark III</string>
to make it the griff cobra you just need to change
'cobra3-player' to 'griff_normalmapped_cobra_mkIII_player'

don't forget to make a backup copy of your save file before any changes

Hi -LOC- and welcome.... also, don't forget to restart Oolite holding the shift key down until the spinning Cobra appears.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

True, but it's a good idea to do it anyway when you have changed something, just in case. After having suffered a few headaches when I started playing Oolite, I now do it automatically whenever I start Oolite regardless.

Thanks.

Why not notepad (i.e. - I already opened it in there)?

Also, thanks for all the information. Now is there a way to have this ship design as default when a new game is started up?

notepad adds extra symbols that make it unreadable to the game.

notepad++ works as does open-office or wordpad and probably Word as well

MS Word would probably be a VERY BAD idea. It adds TONS of extra lines. And I guess OO wouldn't be much better.

@ -LOC-: If you're on Windows, use Wordpad for any Oolite-related editing. Or get yourself Notepad++. But stay away from everything else.

I actually used OO for most of my oxping so I can say that it does work, the only reason I sugested Word is because it works very similarly to OO, I have not actually tried it so I can't say for sure.
