A lot of new spambots upload inappropriate content in their avatars. This creates a problem because until an administrator terminates the bots, their avatars are accessible by anyone looking up the profiles.

I would like to request the admins to once again enforce disabling of avatars, or at least no possibility of new users uploading avatars without having at least one valid post on the board. Not sure if the later is feasible though.

After this morning's batch, I'd have to reluctantly agree with a_c... although the second option (if possible) would be favourite.

If it's no worse than the females sans clothing we just witnessed, I'm inclined to disagree. As discussed earlier, the avatar is another opportunity for the bot-makers to reveal themselves as such.
If the overriding concern is to protect the unwary from the results of mindless clicking of links, then disabling the ability to put links in signatures & set a website should both have a higher priority than avatars.

There are valid reasons for registering on a forum without having any intention to post. The question is really one of finding a balance: How much are we willing to inconvenience genuine new users in order to lighten the workload of the Assassins?

Can you be sure that it is going to be just that in the future? What stops a spammer from uploading explicit content on their avatar and who can guarantee that this cannot happen?

Anyway, my suggestion was not made to inconvenience users, it was based on the fact that there are also minors browsing this board.

I'm certainly not questioning your intentions. But no way how you spin it, any restriction on a new account is an inconvenience.

And to restate my main point:
Disabling avatars because we're worried about minors spending their time checking user profiles getting exposed to 125x125 pixels of porn but leaving the ability to link to other websites is a tad silly.

I'm not arguing one way or the other here. But of the ways for unwanted content to get into a profile, the avatar is the least cause for concern. (Unless we start getting into nitpicking territory about the other things being one more click away. That may have some sort of legal ramifications beyond my ken.)

Just checking....newest member is currently OdeliaExcard, but the profile seems to be non-existant. Has this member been removed, or is this a cloaker?

Newly registered users can no longer change their avatar or use a signature on a post. There doesn’t appear to be a way to stop them from editing the signature (which shows up on profile pages), though.
